Thread: The Carrier Bag Scandal

  1. #31

Default Re: The Carrier Bag Scandal

In the election this year, California voters CHOSE to outlaw single-use plastic bags. We, the people, the shoppers, voted for it because we have so often see the damage done to the land, waters, and wild animals by carelessly discarded bags. Even those that are responsibly discarded end up filling our landfills, another blight, but one that can't be avoided.

I have a bag stuffed with reusable bags in my car, they're inexpensive, and never tear from a heavy load.

[QUOTE=asktricia;1637088]I carry a couple of eBid bags in my handbag, they fold up quite nicely and hold quite a bit of shopping. I have also been asked 'what is eBid'.

Tesco offer shopping with or without bags. If you choose without the trays have to be emptied item by item. If you choose with bags they charge a standard 35p per order no matter how many bags are used.

I too use my ebid bag a lot and a couple of other cotton bags. I have pannier bags on my bike and i carry the basket out and transfer them to my bike bags.

I was under the impression that most plastic carrier bags these days are biodegradable. Certainly, the ones I've kept my Christmas lights in have started to degrade after spending two years in a cupboard. That said, they do cause an environmental problem when they are carelessly discarded, as does all rubbish. I reuse carrier bags as bin liners and containers to hold recycled waste, so I try to accumulate them when I can. They also come in for all sorts of other uses around the home and when going on holiday. I will miss them if (when) they go, and I will have to get used to keeping bags in the car and by the door, which I currently never remember to do. It would be a good thing if everyone brought their own bags to the shops, but like all habits, it will take a while for people to get used to it. After being charged for a flimsy bag a few times, I'm sure we would soon get into the habit.

Some bags state that they are, though. And they do seem to deteriorate with age.
