GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) — A Colorado girl who shaved her head to support a friend who went bald because of cancer treatment has been told she violated her school's dress code.
Kamryn Renfro of Grand Junction shaved her head to help Delaney Clements get through chemotherapy. Kamryn at first wasn't allowed to return to classes at Caprock Academy, the charter school she attends. The academy later said she could return, but the school's board of directors is expected to discuss her situation at a meeting Tuesday evening.
The (Grand Junction) Daily Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1gVbSId) reports that the school board's chairwoman says the school's the dress code is designed to promote uniformity and a non-distracting environment. She said exceptions can be made under extraordinary circumstances. The board will decide whether they should make an exception.

My thoughts exactly.

I've never understood school dress codes. We didn't have them where I went to school in NY and I turned out OK, (well, I still like to dress originally, but IMHO that's part of self expression). Some people need to learn the meaning of the words "live and let live."

Some people need to learn the meaning of the word compassion! She didn't do it as a fashion statement or to stand out in the crowd. She did it out of compassion and respect for her friend.

I suspect it was an overly-zealous office person, seeing the rules were followed. without knowing the cause. Also would need to be sure some kid wasn't doing it to tease or be mean to the other child. I'm sure it will work out, and wouldn't it be great if it jump-started some fund-raising activity where kids or teachers could join in the show of support? Bad start to a situation, but I have faith in the good people of GJ. If I hear anything from friends or family who live there, I will pass it on.

Yes, please do. I do hope you're right, IMHO to punish a child for her kindness is beyond stupid.

I do understand the meaning of the gesture and think it was lovely. I was just pointing out how I feel about conformity, not one of my favorite things.

My 9 yr. old grandson had his head shaved last month to support his hockey coach's 15 year old daughter. He was hoping to raise $2000 for cancer research. He raised $3,330.

When he went to school the next day, his teacher and the whole class stood up and clapped. That is the response this other brave girl should have received also.
