PDF writer/converter inquiry for PC

Can anyone recommend a good free PDF writer/converter. I used to have one with my old computer and I don't know if I actually have a free PDF program on my new computer windows 8 because I have no idea where to look (still trying to navigate my new computer with windows 8).

Also, how do I do a search? I was able to do searches with my old XP system.

Here's a free one I have used an older version of: http://en.pdf24.org/

It says it works with Win8 but as I am still using 7 I can't test that for you.
