Thread: Handmade category - in the wrong place

  1. #11

Default Re: Handmade category - in the wrong place

I don't really sell many handmade items, so feel free to discount my comments.

    But I do buy them.

Rather than moving handcrafted items to a top level category, how about adding handcrafted as a "brand" and/or sub-category in each area i.e.:

Porcelain, Pottery & Glass >> Pottery >> Handmade
Clothes, Shoes, Accessories >> Designer: Handmade

    etc, etc, etc.

And as an aside: it would be great to be able to search by brand/size and color when the seller takes the time to input the information.

I love that idea - I did suggest it or something similar a while ago. I think it is the gold standard idea.

Thanks ... just approached this from a buying perspective rather than a selling one. It has never occurred to me to look for a category of "handmade" until I came here. Always look for the item 1st and then handmade.

We have progress - there is a section under jewellery for handcrafted - it will change its name on the next server update.

I sell a lot of vintage tools, and I also occasionally make carver's mallets on my lathe.
I recently sold one to a lady in Washington, and during the exchange of messages, I mentioned that I made it.

That was a very valuable quality to her, though I had never really thought about it. I have been making furniture and other items for years, so it seemed quite normal to me.
However, I will be emphasising the handmade quality in future, and the unique qualities of every one.

But I will still list in "Collectables, tools", because that is where I think people will go if they are looking for a mallet. If I listed them in a general "handmade" category, I think they would be swamped by so many other disparate items.

The only thing these would have in common would be that they are handmade, and I don't think that would be a priority for a searcher - they would be looking for an item for a particular purpose.

I have been thinking about this and can't think of a solution. I like hurry's suggestion in #11, but that led me wonder where would you list your store? I have a store for my handmade items but there are several different categories in it.
