Default Some ideas for ebid - No 1 - Change the name

I said I would do this this time last year, but ti was a big project and we are all busy, but recent events have inspired me to start.

I thought I'd list some of my ideas to build ebid, as we all know it has great potential.

None of these ideas will require huge advertising budgets.

But they are not minor tweaks - all are intended to change the game.

    Number 1

Change the name from ebid to ..... something else.

reason 1 Ebid is an outdated term in today's world - is not an auction site - it is a market place that offers auctions. And most people are not looking for auction sites.
reason 2 Ebid does not own the all important ebid.com and never will

Comments a new name will invigorate things and be more marketable
It will not cost much as no advertising will be needed, all current users will switch over
And people searching for items on Google etc will find them whatever the sites name.

Maybe run a competition to think of a short catchy name - eg Nike, Amazon, Gap, Orange.

The place you can or will be able to do everything.

Sorry but I think you are wrong about the importance of the dot com name.

Secondly most people now treat eBid as a market place and not an auction site.

This idea has been brought up several times before and has always been met with less than positive support.
    What's the #2 idea?

But what do YOU think about the idea?

And I have about 10 suggestions - and I'll do one every few days.

Doesn't matter what I think but my opinion is bad idea. eBid has been around too long to change it's name now.

Agreed wholeheartedly. The ludicrous diatribe found on the .com site indicated how frustrated that particular individual is!

I did what most would do if looking for alternatives to the bay. I just put in a search for "uk auction sites" in my Carrot2 search and took the "first out of the hat".. This gave me http://www.auctionlotwatch.co.uk/auctions.html, where ebid appears as the third in the list. The first two are the bay. At the top of the page are links to the US and Australia. The result is identical for the US. Admittedly the result is different in the Australian search as there are more localised attempts at such sites. Even so ebid ranks fifth in the list (two for the bay, two local and then ebid. In each case links are given, so there is no need to worry about .com, .net or anything else. The results indicate that ebid is now too well known, so changing name would be of no help.

Very rarely do I actually bid on such sites now. "BIN" is so much simpler and everybody nows where they are.

Here in New Zealand our major telecommunications company is called "Telecom" and it has been since it was renamed from the old Post Office. They are now changing its name to "Spark". Most people think its a silly idea to change its name and others (me included) think its a silly name. But they say they are doing it as they want to be more moderniised and relate to younger people and reflect that they are more of an information company than just a phone and internet provider.

I agree. The importance of dot com name is exaggerated.
About the name. Shakespeare said "A rose by any name would smell as sweet". The name is not that important. After what does "Ebay" mean.

I've always suspected a hint towards the "Hudson Bay Company"...So pretentious!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EBay

Originally, the site belonged to Echo Bay Technology Group, Omidyar's consulting firm. Omidyar had tried to register the domain name echobay.com, but found it already taken by the Echo Bay Mines, a gold mining company, so he shortened it to his second choice, eBay(dot)com.
