Not quite sure what point you're trying to make.
It was a rebellion by the Ulster Unionists which prevented the entire island of Ireland achieving independence after the Nationalists won the elections of 1918.

Who knows their world history?

Has any country, lets say since WW2, that has gained independence or split up (Czechoslovakia style) ever voted to join back together?

If no, why is it generally assumed that Scotland will find it impossible to go it alone?

Yugoslavia split up recently and hasn't gotten back together (that I know of anyhow).

Recent poll put Yes at 47% and NO at 53% =

Support for a Yes vote in September's independence referendum is growing dramatically, a new poll reveals today. The ICM poll for Scotland on Sunday shows that Yes now needs a swing of just over three percentage points to take the lead, with eight months still to go until the vote.


It puts support for Yes at 37% - up five points from as similar poll in September - with support for No dipping five points to 44%.
But when the 19% of undecided voters were pressed to indicate how they were likely to vote, support for Yes rose to 47% - only six points behind No. This means that a swing of just over three points is needed to put Yes into the lead.
Scotland on Sunday says that if the progress recorded over the last four months is replicated in the eight months remaining until the September 18 referendum, the Yes campaign is in course to win.
The paper adds that 'the figures represent the largest backing for Yes to be recorded in an independently-commissioned survey' since campaigning began in May 2012.
The poll also shows:
• Increasing numbers of people believe a Yes vote will benefit Scotland's economy
• A 26% surge in support for Yes among 16-24-year-olds
• A significant rise in support for Yes among women
• Rising numbers of people believe a Yes vote will lead to higher pensions
• A growing belief there will be more equality in an independent Scotland

Suppose the act of the union had never happened, Scotland was still an Independent country and the vote we were taking in under a years' time was not on whether we should leave the union but on whether we should join it. In the scenario, what would be the case for the union?

Your main parliament will move hundreds of miles away and your MP's will be in a small minority.
You will have a government you didn't vote for.
You will hand over all your oil and gas revenues to the London treasury.
The biggest nuclear arsenal in Western Europe will be based on the river Clyde, 30 miles from your largest city.
An austerity budget will be imposed from London, cutting jobs and threatening public services, instead of Scotland being responsible for raising and spending its own taxes.
You will join a country whose health and education services are rapidly being privatised Even if the majority of Scottish MPs oppose a policy by 90% it will still be imposed on ( like bedroom tax, austeraty cuts etc ).
You will pay in alot more than we allow you get back,
