you forgot getting married at 16 without parental consent.
When I was 18 my first ever vote was the referendum which i voted Yes in but because of all the restrictions it didnt go through. I have voted SNP all my life and will be voting Yes again. Smaller countries than us get by adequately. I do think we should take on our share of the debt and that we keep the pound. If we dont keep the pound we should go back to the Merk and not the euro. I dont think we should need passports to go within the UK. I think an independant Scotland would be a good thing not only for Scotland but for England too. I am Scottish first, British second and European third and am proud to be so

Yes we have been a member of the EU since 1973 as part of the UK, and already comply with all EU regulations.

I remember hearing about this (not enough unfortunately, while every Congressional sneeze or fart is recorded for posterity, ugh) and wondering what eBidders thought, especially those in the UK. It sounds like some think this is a bad idea. Anyone think it's a good one? Curious what brought this whole question about after 300+ years.

Reminds me a bit of the Quebecois (sorry for the likely incorrect spelling, my French is non-existent, especially the spelling of French words) wanting to secede from Canada a while back, though that didn't pan out.

It's not so much what brought the question up after 300 years, it's more that it's a question that has never gone away.

The Act of Union was signed in 1707
Ony 6 years later in 1713 Scottish politicians had a serious attempt at terminating the treaty (defeated by 4 proxy votes in the House of Lords).
By 1715 the first Jacobite Rebellion kicked off. Followed by another in 1745
In 1791 Robert Burns wrote "Such A Parcel of Rogues In A Nation" which summed up the feelings at the time. It's worth a read.

Looking on the bright side if Scotland does leave the UK then their will be about 60 less Labour MPS sitting in Westminster.

Actually that also brings up an interesting possibility...

Say in 2014 Scotland votes Yes in the indepencence referendum.
Then in 2015 in the UK general election Labour wins with the help of the 60ish Scottish Labour MPs
Then in 2016 on the day that Scotland declares independence Westminster presumably loses those 60 MPs.

Assuming that the Labour majority in Westminster as less than 60... What happens then?

Then you would either keep as is with regards to labour as a minority government or call an election.
Lets face it we had to put up with a government we didnt vote for last election. Scotland only voted in 1 Tory MP yet they are our government.

Since Tony's Politics thread has just touched on this one, I thought I'd open it up as a brand new thread.

So with about 8 months to go to the referendum... what are your thoughts on the whole Scottish Independence discussion?

Do you think it will happen? If it does, do you think it will it affect you. Will we need an eBid Scotland? Will you need overseas postage to get a package from Grimsby to Glasgow? Who wants to volunteer to take a shedload of Trident nuclear missiles. What about the side effect that it could possibly bring down a Westminster government.

All thoughts and opinions welcome.

Hi. Well, I'm not Scottish, I'm English, but I love Scotland to bits. I would love to live somewhere in Scotland. So, I hope you don't mind if I offer you my thoughts on this. I think if Scotland went Independent it would be a sad thing. After over 300 years as being part of a United Kingdom. How many people have you spoken to want independence. As people say independence is a nice thing, but seriously, could Scotland go it alone and survive. Your leader is all for independence and joining the EU. My God, join the EU and you might as well close Scotland down. The EU is nothing but a luxurious gravy train for the rich to get richer. YOU my dear friend and all the Scottish public will be just become dregs of the bottom of a barrel. UK are paying £50m a day, plus extra bonuses when EU cries for more money to keep the wolves from the door. Do you want to be told what you can do and say, lose your freedom, your Human Rights, be classed as racist if you are White British. Do you want to lose your laws, freedom, and rights and have laws forced on you by the EU. Do you want your country overrun by immigrants, criminals, gypsies, from other countries, who will take your jobs, because greedy businesses will take them on and pay them paltry wages and get rid of you. I live in the north-east of England and when I go to town, I can see the difference in people here. I feel a stranger in my own town. I would say to all Scottish people to think really hard before making that big decision. Your, lives, your freedom depends on it.
