Too many people seem to think that green energy is the answer to all our problems, but as you rightly say it is only a part of the solution. Tidal would provide a regular supply, but there are limited areas where it is viable. Solar can certainly play a big part during the day, wind for me is virtually a waste of money as they are so inefficient and it cannot be predicted when and how much power they are supplying, so there is a need to have power stations running as a back up almost continually. Wave power could have a part to play, but the technology needs improving.

The biggest thing we could do is improve our energy use. Homes and factories should be designed and built to be energy efficient, it is far easier to do that during the build than after. Electrical goods should be more efficient and where they are the savings should be better publicised. People should waste less. I read once that it takes three power stations to power the computers, TV's and dvd's that are left on or on standby in the USA overnight. That may or may not be entirely true but I was on a green committee at the college I used to work at and we had a month where we were all assigned rooms and went round after classes and turned all the equipment off. That months electricity usage dropped over 30%. That was one building out of five main campus buildings, and I am sure many other offices, factories, schools, hospitals etc are the same.

As for the Germans and generally the rest of Europe, they do what is best for them, in the UK we always appear to try to do the right thing no matter what the cost.

Forgot that one. But even with wave power there needs to be more work done before it can provide a large contribution, though there is quite a bit of research and testing going on that could hopefully make it a better proposition.
