That's why they grew on the battlefields- the earth disturbed by shells encouraged the seeds to germinate.
i believe that the seeds can lay dormant for up to 60 years.

Would be a nice idea to grow some in our gardens, though. Not too late, I think, to get some flowering this year.
Wilkinsons, and some of the Pound Shops are surprisingly good for seeds.

The fields around here are a mass of poppies every year. Last year they were particularly spectacular, spreading to the roadside verges and into gardens. One field has a path through, worn by the feet of schoolchildren over the years. It was a wonderful sight last year to see these children walking through fields of poppies. Very Monet.

It became quite a danger to traffic last year as many came to take photographs and parked on the main road.
