Mittens from Sweaters

I was cruising around Pinterest this morning (boy, can you get lost in there!), came across this photo-series on how to make easy-peasy mittens...I'm trying this one! Just wanted to share.

My main question, having never attempted these before, is this...when you cut the sweater how do you prevent raveling before sewing them? Also, should I use a 'fine' or 'regular' zig-zag stich?

looking at the photo, I would say that the sweater has felted (washed too hot?) In that case you won't need to worry about unravelling.Otherwise I would suggest a row of stitching near the sewing line before cutting out.
