Default Getting a good image of a coin

Anyone got any good suggestions on how to get a decent picture of a coin?

The camera I am using isn't top of the range, its 14 megapixels tho so should be fine for the job.

Think I need help mostly with lighting/background.

    Any help greatly appreciated

That's what I thought - can see a long slow job ahead of me as I have mother's huge collection of Victrian pennies to sort ............... and scan .................. and list................... sometime!

I bought a magnifying glass set in a stand about 4 inches high. I set a gooseneck lamp on each side and angle them so the light doesn't shine directly on the coin. Then put my camera right on the magnifying glass. Sometimes it takes two or three tries (thank heaven for digital cameras!), but eventually I get good pictures. Once in a while, for smaller coins, I have to put a little piece of cork under the coin to raise it a bit to get a clear picture.

I do try scanning them first, but they often look flat and dull when I do that.

Also, the newer US banknotes have something in them that prevents my scanner from copying them. I assume it's a security measure, because there have been problems with high-quality scanners producing very good counterfeit banknotes.

I bought a cheap little Vivitar that goes up to 10 Megapixels. I have two clamp lights and true spectrum light bulbs that I purchased at one of the local hardware stores and I made a cheap white/light box. You can find out a lot of information on the net about building one of these and the best approach to taking the need photos. I never go over 3 megapixels for the coins unless there are particulars about the coin that needs to be shown, then I will use 5 MP's. The best thing is to practice with what ever set up you have to bring the best true image of the coins or paper monies. I also shoot several pics of the obverse and reverse sides to ensure a good pic. I not a professional photographer, but I do get photos that show the coins imagery.

I scan lots of them at one time. It creates a single PDF with many coins in it. You can then just make multiple copies and crop to the coin you need.
