Window Improvement

I need a little help, I am living in a coastal area and I am experiencing yearly repair of my windows because of the hurricane and storm damage. Does anyone knows great idea on how to improve our window cover?

Only thing I could think of would be the external wrought iron safety bars that cover your whole window, and which can be opened from the inside via a foot latch or something for emergency exit. Or very heavy duty wooden shutters....or steel shutters.
