How about changing the colour of the price of an item when it has a bid? Or a logo which indicates "this item is selling" or some such?
Whatever technique you use for displaying it, it immediately becomes apparent there are very few bids. Put up a number, change a colour, shove up a picture of a banana - the lack of bananas is an issue.

Those who want bids to show all seem to believe it generates interest & excitement

Maybe it does for some people but for me that doesn't work

    If I want an item I bid on it, if I don't I won't,
I certainly wouldn't become interested in something just because others thought it worth buying!

If I want an item & it already has a bid on it,
the first thing I do is look for one without,
or even better a Buy Now.

So I guess a bids column would show me the listings to ignore.

Only if I really want something (& at my age really wanting material goods is rare) will I place a bid on a item that has already been bid on, usually for the amount I would like to get it for,
I may even place a second bid for the maximum amount I'm willing to pay.
If it goes over that forget it.
I won't be forced into spending money I don't have just because somebody else is richer than me.

    My sentiments, exactly.

Furthermore, I honestly believe that column after column of listings with no bids would be detrimental to eBid.

All of you who are totally logical about whether something has a bid on it are in the minority. In real life, competition does improve final prices but, there has to be competition and we all know that being outbid here is a rarity. So the competition thing doesn't apply.

I regularly watch auctions with multiple bids on to see if the price is still within my range at the end..if it is, I snipe

I would also take a peek at busy auctions to see what all the fuss is about and then might buy something I never knew I wanted
