why does it not have greek lettering then? i thought greek coins had cyrillic (sp?) characters

Good point. I'm not a coin enthusiast but as soon as I saw the picture, Greek came to mind. I think I'll leave the answer to the experts.

It does have Greek lettering (that's how I identified it!)

That's Cypriot. The lettering on the left is in the Greek alphabet and says Republic of Cyprus. The lettering on the right in "normal" letters says the same in Turkish.
