I am pleased to announce the chosen charity for March's YDC event.
This will be http://www.fisherhouse.org/ - Fisher Houses are homes provided for the families of returning injured servicemen and women. It means that loved ones can stay near recuperating spouses etc giving the love and support they need to recover fully from their injuries and trauma.
The charity is American based and was set-up to aid American service personnel, but the idea has recently been imported into the UK too and Fisher House is working alongside Help for Heroes to provide homes in this country, with the first UK house being built next to the Birmingham hospital where many injured service personnel go.
The idea is not just to provide on-site support for the injured, but to do so without draining the finances of those who visit through having to pay for hotel accommodation.
I think it's a brilliantly simple idea, and a worthy cause and hope everybody will support it - particularly since it's trans-Atlantic.
It's not clear if I will be able to make payments via the US site, but I'm hopeful it will take my Amex card! Anybody is welcome to make payments direct, of course. The page is here: http://www.fisherhouse.org/donate/
I'll gather payments otherwise as normal and if it turns out there's no easy way to get the funds to them from the UK will be asking for a US volunteer to take the money from me via PayPal or whatever and pass it on to the charity. We'll worry about that at the time, and I'll repeat the donation information in the tally thread at the end of the run.
