Thread: Cocktails!!! and Music

Hey Old, what do reckon about the Test Match, pretty even so far, though you might just have the edge ! Been staying up to watch though must admit to dropping off a few times. Smith is a bloody good captain and he well deserved to carry his bat.

Last night went to a concert to see Tom Russell, another great night. He was supported by a really good guitarist Max De Bernardi, here is a vid of one one the songs they played "The Sparrow Swansea" it's all about Dylan Thomas. This vid was from a gig earlier in the tour. Also Tom referenced another of my favourite singers the late great John Stewart, singing part of John's song "July you're a woman". Here's John's original version.

Max De Bernardi is a very talented guitar picker so her's a sample of his style.

Trish hope you are feeling a bit better and can enjoy your meal.

Work later today so one more tune from Tom before I go

    G'day all

Sorry to hear you're crook again Trish - hope you had a top birfdee anyway, even if you couldn't play up!
Same to you WYO, sounds like you need "new" medicines out there on the plains! G'day to Sadie!

Great choons there Books! - especially like "Greasy Greens" - nice pickin' that!
Yes, the teams are very closely matched, & Smith saved our butts yet again! Looks like we'll have to be on our guard for the rest of the series, as the Brits will improve from here I'm sure!
We may? be just in front ATM, by the skin of our teeth! I'm about to strap in front of the telly again.
Sorry to see Joe Root get clocked on the scone yesterday - it was a nasty hit, & put his helmet out of shape & knocked an ear guard off.
Luckily he was OK, thankfully. Was a bad time of day when that happened - in the arvo, the sun crosses the ground, & is in the batsman's face, so there was a good chance he didn't even see it coming? I don't think that type of play should be allowed at such times!

Here's a choon from Harvey Mandel - I saw him here in the early 7o's when he played with Canned Heat. They were in support on the Albert King tour at the time.
This choon is off his 1973 instrumental album & is still one of my favourites. He is one of the first guitarists to use the 2 handed tapping technique, & is used here to very good effect at the end! He is now 72 & still doing gigs & recording! A monster player!
Check out the rest of the album and CRANK IT UP

Old, once again England fade under the Aussie sun ! We may do better in the day night test! You deffo have the better captain, sadly Joe Root is under performing since becoming captain. Only good to come out was how well the new guys did.

Sadly can't play the Harvey Mandell track, though remember listening to some of his stuff several years back, will have to re-visit. Been listening to another fave of mine this evening Jackie Leven.

G'day all - hope all are well?

Yes Booksie - it should be mopped up early this morning & I'm sure Warner will see to that!
Smith is into everything, you just can't keep him out of the game - he's everywhere it seems!
Broad had nothing to whinge about & was clearly out (although to the finest of edges) BUT I thought Moeen Ali got the rough end of the pineapple, & should have been given the benefit of the doubt (& there was one IMHO) Even our former Capt. Michael Clarke now commentator, thought the same!
Probably wouldn't make too much difference to the outcome, except delay matters - however - we'll never know exactly what Ali's final score could have been?
The extra pressure on Joe Root with Capt. duties may be too much for him, although I don't think he could have handled things any better in this match - things just went our way! Take Smith out of the equation & the boot would have been on the other foot! I'm sure the Brits will put up a better fight in Adelaide, as long as the pink ball doesn't worry them? Our new guys are also doing very nicely, so far!
Here's an interesting fact - The Aussies haven't lost a test match at the Gabba since 1988

That Harvey Mandel number is "Midnight Sun II" from his Shangrenade album, & all from that album are well worth a listen.
Never heard of Jackie Leven, but I like his style of stuff & an obviously talented poet. Sad he's no longer with us.

    About to strap in again!

Hi everyone, just a brief visit to say hello.
Had the family here all weekend, and I have just about recovered.
Tomorrow is a big day for us - I have to take JR to the hospital for the surgery/skin grafts on his head scabs.
Not quite sure yet what time the operation is or when we can fetch him home.

My birthday meal didn't go down too well - literally.
I had a very fine steak but just couldn't eat it - I just pecked at it, a waste of good money really! Still got an upset tum.
I was glad when everyone went home after the weekend, I felt in much need of a lie-down!

Glad you boys are enjoying the cricket.
    Hope everyone is well.
    Catch you later.

Yes, been enjoying the cricket - but that's easy when you're on the winning side! That's 1 - Zip guys!
BUT - it takes real dedication to be strapped in front of the idiot box for 4 solid days!
My spine has turned to mush & the 'ol eyeballs are now rectangular.
It seemed every time I left the room (for any reason) someone would lose their wicket - I hate that.
I'll be glad of the break until the Adelaide test on the 2nd December - when it all starts again!

A few choons & a drinkie till then!

    I'm late, but back again.

Sorry to miss your birfdy Trish, have another celebration this weekend when JR is back and you are feeling better.

I'll keep the drinks on ice for now.

Old, you are taking me back in time with that selection of choons,
First heard that Norman Greenbaum choon in the early hours of the morning in a transport cafe just outside of Bristol when I was travelling down to St.Ives in my Psychovan back when it was first released (1969?).
We used to stop for a pint and a pastie in the Rising Sun Inn in Lynmouth, a thatched roof smugglers inn.

Wilburys, what can you say, the Super Group!

Hard to follow up that selection, but I can offer this one..

    Stay safe folks.

    Howdy all

Pos, The Animals were on the list for sure, & would you believe, that HseRSun was the first geetar choon I learnt - so that's a special tune for me!
Man! weren't they young in that clip - but then, I guess we all were at the time! It would be quite difficult to get me out of one of those smugglers inns if I had the opportunity! (do they rent rooms?)

We have drizzle increasing to rain today & 26C max. Was a warmish 21c overnight. The election result from last Saturday is still up in the air & counting continues, but it appears the sitting state Gubment will be returned for another stint.

Well lets try another list of blasts from the past (& drinkies)

Old - what are you doing to me?
That selection of choons was just amazing - nearly rocked myself outtma chair! Brilliant stuff!

Posbear, I used to really fancy Eric Burden when I was in my teens. What a choon - superb.
    Thanks for remembering my birfday!

Well, JR had his surgery yesterday. Poor soul, I feel so sorry for him.
He has a round 2" piece of something actually sewn into his top forehead skin. It is holding in place the patch of skin that they took from the top of his arm.
The patch has blood congealed underneath and it looks like a Jammy Dodger stuck on his head!
    Dominic called him Johnny Dodger!
It has been weeping and blood trickling down, not a pleasant sight.

On top of all this, tomorrow he has to go for a pre-op assessment for his stoma reversal op - he has had a date for his reversal which is next Wed.
I don't know if he will be well/fit enough to go through another operation so soon.
He desperately wants to though, as he is brassed off with all the distasteful palaver of the stoma bag and fears that he will have to wait even longer for the reversal if the op is cancelled.

I'm soo tired of everything right now, but at least my tummy bug/IBS has stopped making me feel so rotten.
I'm trying to get all the Christmas pressies ordered and wrapped - darn having such a huge family!
It will be worth it though once Christmas is here, and I see the joy of everyone when they open their pressies, especially the little ones.
I think some nice calming music may be in order ......
    Here ya go .....

    G'day all

Plenty more where they came from Trish - glad you enjoyed the selections. Hope JR's appointment went well, & his scone is on the mend?
