    Default Bookshops Closing

I heard today that bookshops are closing on the High Streets and in the Malls. They are being replaced by Charity Shops and Thrift Shops.

That is very sad; I have always loved buying books.

I suppose the 3000 or so books I sold in the last ten years have contributed to this in some way, though I don't sell the new books that I love buying in the shops.

Not sure your books put the High Street stores out of business.............perhaps your books instilled a love of reading that kept the stores going for so long!!!

I don't think they will all disappear. My stepson - at age 18, said he didn't think kindle et al would take the place of books..........."There's nothing like holding a book." I was suprised at thim........this from one who is so techy oriented.

I can no longer afford new books, cant even afford Kindle prices,.

Have to admit i buy from charity shops and often leave some for them as well,im using a local charity shop where they have all volunteers and no paid staff so not much on expences.

Our only book shop for new books closed years ago and our only second hand book shop closed recently too.

I buy books from charity shops in town now...or on-line.

I work for a book shop. Started with one day a week in the shop, then two in the shop, then two in the warehouse in the off season and now doing two in the warehouse and one in the shop, so in the space of a year my hours have trebled. Mostly second-hand, some new. Good used book shops are definitely getting harder to find, I'm very lucky to have one on my doorstep!

It is simple economics. If people buy books from the shop in sufficient quantity, it will survive. Otherwise, it will close. The convenience of buying online and the ease with which you can pick up a second hand copy for relative peanuts has closed a lot of shops.

I love books, would buy more if I could only get my hands on a larger wallet.

Best wishes for many sales to all,

You can't beat a book in your hands. Turning the pages of a book is a darn sight better than pressing a button to flip a page on a thin piece of expensive electronic equipment. Plus the fact, books don't need batteries, go wrong or get stolen.

A book is timeless but a piece of expensive electronic equipment has a shelf life.

I love books. I have a Kindle. They have different charms. I don't find it necessary to choose one or the other, I'm happy using both!
