Lightbulb What about an eBid book group?

I know there are plenty of keen readers, and buyers and sellers of books here. I was vaguely thinking about a virtual book group. Guidelines to be decided, but something like: each month everybody who wants to nominates a book, the winner is chosen by poll, then we read it and chat about it. Probably need to be reasonable timescales to allow for getting hold of books and allowing for busy lives - maybe one a month?

    Whaddya think?

I like the theory, but know myself too well, I'm unreliable for this sort of thing, get too easily sidetracked.
I spend a lot of time tinkering with my website and listing books
So, reluctantly, not for me, bykimbo

I think that this will require more dedication than most people will be able to achieve. If it works, great! But I think after the first month or so most people will find that they couldn't afford the new book, didn't have time to read it, forgot about it or have one of another hundred other "reasons" why they couldn't do what they agreed to. Even book circles where someone actually supplies the book often end up with the same problems. Perhaps sticking to public domain works that can be downloaded easily and free might improve its chances of success?

I joined a Literary Discussion group many years ago and was disappointed in the lack of commitment by the majority of members. A few of us would read the prescribed text and it soon became obvious that others were merely picking up on our comments and had not given the book a glance - most of which were provided. I suspect, too, that many had looked at the internet and were merely rehashing ideas from there.

So, great idea, Kimbo and wish you success. But, sadly....'I'm out'

Oh well, it's clearly not going to fly. Shame, but thanks to those of you who took a brief interest.

Bummer, I was looking forward to this. Re: obtaining books, anyone can get books through public libraries/interlibrary loan if needs be without incurring charges, though it does take a little time sometimes.

Oh well, it was a good idea. Kimbo, if you do decide to start one let me know - reading is my biggest hobby, that and posting on forums.

Best wishes for many sales to all,

At least people were honest and realistic, which I much prefer, rather than said "yeah, great" then let us down. I'll mull it a bit more and have some less "formal" ideas that might fly.... I'll keep you posted, but don't sit there waiting.
