    Your welcome..............

You have helped me to understand why the majority of the magazine and comic sellers have such an appalling google exposure level - they are doing the same thing with entering too many digits and ending up with an MPN rather than an ISBN identifier.

Hey deano and zen was just looking at this thread as per Convo on another thread okay if you shorten the bar code by removing last 2 didgits eg) issue number for uk then won't that limit you in a search? You would just pull up all the mags/ comics in that run with the same code on? Some running to nearly 1000 issues? Also not sure but comics US barcode issue number is not the last 2 didgits the last 2 didgits are always 11 and then the 3 didgits before that is the issue number.

The honest answer is, I don't really know.

How google shopping uses ISBN, MPN's, UPC, EAN's etc is not something I fully understand at the moment, despite having read through Google Merchants information sheets on it. So until I do, I'm following Deans guidance as he understands it and has more experience of it than I do.

From the little research I've done on this, I've discovered that magazines, periodicals and presumably comics etc actually use an ISSN (International Standard Serial Number) in EAN (European Article Number) format with the addition of a 2 digit code which turns it into a 13 digit ISBN number. The main difference between an ISSN and an ISBN is that a periodical isn't assigned to a particular publisher whereas a book ISBN is.

Quite how Google Shopping uses this I have no idea!

I've attached a picture of an ISBN barcode showing how the ISSN/EAN elements are made up.

Have done a little bit of reading on comic bar codes it seams to be a well know problem with them and google.

the bar code above is from an actual marvel comic.
the 1st six numbers are the brand eg) marvel then the next six are the story arch eg) uncanny X-Men then moving to the top of the little bar code the 1st 3 digits are the issue number 373 and then on every bar code i can find for US comic is this double 1.
Now a lot of people are saying just miss off the little bar code but then you just get the full run of Uncanny X-Men or what is showing on google anyway. I have just scaned the bar code with google on my Iphone and it only brings up a list of issues and not the actual issue so it looks like google have a problem with comic bar codes. Have also put the full code in google and got nothing then took of the last 5 digits and again just got a long list of x-men comics.
This maybe the reason that there are limited amount of comics showing on google shopping hmm.

Just an idea, kind of the same lines as Gazza's OP

If a seller lists an item from brand x, and that brand is not in the eBid system, could it then be auto added?

This issue happens a lot to me, and would be good if this could be worked on.

I do agree, Sarah. The only reservation is that typos would be autoadded. I used to have to check the custom dictionary in Word every month or so to remove our sons' & my husband's typos when we had one computer for the four of us. I hate to think how bad their custom dictionaries are without my vigilance!
