Thread: Labels removed. Why?

  1. #1

    Default Labels removed. Why?

Yesterday I found a supplier of some clothing. most items have had their label either removed or cut with scissors.

Does anyone know why a supplier would do this?

The labels are cut if they buy new with or without tags from a supplier to prevent store returns. I believe they have to do it because of some law. It has been known for some well known high street stores to keep an eye out for their old or over supplied stock to make sure they are not being supplied with intact tags so to speak.

Here is what is said on one well know wholesaler's site:

It is a condition of sale that all High Street store branding must be removed. Usually this is done by the Manufacturer, or by ourselves in-house, but in any case it is also the responsibility of you as the buyer to ensure that this is done before offering the item for sale

Yep, manufacturing over-runs or factory seconds.

A single factory can be manufacturing goods for 5 or 6 different high street stores at the same time.
With orders of hundreds of thousands in unit numbers, it's not uncommon to have an over-run of 5k or more....this is factored in at the beginning of the process. It's a sort of insurance policy....eg. a machine decides to splutter oil all over a finished rack of garments!
On completion of the contract, the manufacturer is generally free to "offload" the surplus to whoever they choose.....ie: factory shops, market traders etc. It's a kind of perk, but in reality, the factory floor space is more valuable than the products!
But, removal of store labels, or "cut through" is a mandatory part of the original agreement between manufacturer & store.
This stops any unscrupulous person "returning" goods to the store for a refund.

At the luxury end of the market......the over-runs are not so large, and any surplus are DESTROYED.
Thus preserving the exclusivity of the brand!

I have just started selling childrens ex chainstore clothes and i am a bit confused about which labels i am to remove. I know the wholesaler stated i must remove them if i resell them to stop buyers returning them to shops. Can anyone give me any advice about this, is it just the sale tag or does it mean i have to cut all the labels that are inside the clothes off.
