Ebid and advertising.

Just to put things in a little more perspective:

I have just over 300 listings over a third of them books.

And yet I have over 62% of ebid listings for cake stands thats 62% of 32 items offered in UK.
I also have 34% of listings for Pyrex offered in UK 34% of 114 listings.
Colclough China I have 41% of listings 41% of 24 items (another member has about ther same!)

It just goes to show how far ebid need to grow before they even contemplate fee hikes or advertizing!

Yes we need to do some more analysis like that.

I have 100% of the repaired cymbal listings on eBid.
I have 62% of the repaired cymbals listed on ebay.

Low fees no advertising no sales.
Ridiculously high fees huge advertising in the past plenty of sales.

We have to stop automatically believing fees will raise due to an advertising campaign. It's not necessarily true that will be up to eBid. Again if they want to grow fast, be able to afford advertising without raising fees and keep the ebay jumpers now is the time. Ebay is vulnerable right now eBid should take advantage of it and when they come we need to keep them here. Small or large, regular or unusual items we must figure a way to meake them stay...sales!

Yours is a VERY specialised niche. (as is mine)

And yes you are right.
We need to get the new sellers selling so that they stay and that will build up a virtuous circle.

But its easier said than done.

That's my point!

Ebid would be advertizing without the substance behind it, a false promise.

We need to grow a lot bigger before any real advertizing is considered, except of course member's own self promotion.

Much easier said then done but these threads come on every now and then so I like to comment on them and also read what others have to say.
I just hate to see folks making the jump then hightail it outta here after a little while.
Ebay was kind of lucky. They pretty much started this auction site thing (I might be mistaken) so they were the Pioneers of it and no one had anything else to compare it to. Stands to reason some advertising built them and built them quick.
90 million members is huge or is it 900 million. Even if eBid wanted to level out at 50 million members in 2 years that would be over 68,000 members per day to sign up. 500 million members is about 685,000 members per day. Although those are big numbers it's still quite reachable. We are still faced with the same problem though. How do you get newbies to stay while waiting for the millions to come over. I think as it has been said a lot of times before sellers will sell on multiple sites, remain here while eBid grows with intentions of coming back once eBid is stronger. Only problem with that is we get sellers not putting their best foot towards eBid rather just riding it out and why not, from their eyes it's free to list. With this comes the ghost listers who don't respond to questions within a reasonable amount of time, sellers not paying attention to their auctions and never look to see if something has sold and it needs to ship or the sellers who sold the item elsewhere but forgot to close the auction here then the item receives bids. This just makes our buyers/visitors a little leary of buying from others here.

That is the problems with all oline auction sites.
They cannot "force" sellers to sell the right sort of stuff, for the right prices, in the right way.

In the recent months even weeks, various sellers have joined up filling much needed categories but they leave rather quickly due to sales not being what they expected. The more people that know about eBid the more sellers will come over, the more sellers who come over bringing various categories of merchandise. Without the sales sellers won't stay without sellers buyers won't buy. This is why something is needed to quickly fill all voids and I have to say that something is advertising. I haven't been here that long but long enough to see the same routine. Seller comes from ebay, forums help with listing and about me page and self promoting, seller tries gets fed up and leaves.
Hasn't changed since I have been here so maybe there is something to this thing folks call advertising.
