I'm curious because I do see kitchen knives for sale on eBid. I do have some chef's knives and steak knife sets I would like to list. I can understand the ban on weapons-type knives, considering the restrictive laws.
In the US sales are generally restricted to those over 18. There are also a lot of restrictions on "assisted-opening" knives, which is a nicer word for a switchblade. Years ago, that other auction site allowed assisted-opening knives with blades of 2 inches or less. Let me tell you, there were hundreds of 4 1/2 inch blades listed as 2 inch.
I sold a large collection of vintage pocket knives and some newer Case models on the other site. I agree it would be nice if Case was available, but it would be hard to draw the line between "collectible" and "weapon" knives.

The law is written so as to apply to kitchen knives as well as knitting needles and letter openers

"It is an offence for any person to sell to a person under the age of 18 any knife, knife blade, razor blade, axe or any other article which has a blade or is sharply pointed and which is made or adapted for causing injury to the person." [CJA 1988 section 141A]

I think in that quote what is important, in reference to knitting needles, is the 'AND WHICH IS MADE....FOR CAUSING INJURY.' Knitting needles aren't made for the purpose of causing injury. If you take out the AND WHICH IS MADE...etc, you couldn't sell razors, shovels, forks, T-Squares, Picture frames, CD cases, or other things with sharp points or corners...........

Pocket knives aren't intended as weapons either

But a knitting needle is neither made nor adapted for causing injury. It is made for knitting wool.

Now if I modified needles to become a weapon (e.g. fitted two into a handle and sold them as eyeball removers) then they would come under the regulations.

Technically, things like hunting knives do not fall under that regulation as they are not 'made' as weapons to cause injury to a person. I think (can't be bothered to read it) there is another section relating to blade length which would apply though.

For anyone interested in what Terry keeps quoting from: See http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1996/26/contents

    Section 6 applies to sales.

Regardless, eBid is not the seller. The law specifically only applies to "Any person who sells".
