Pinking shears are size related.
Pinking a large object looks good, but the smaller the object, the more it gets to look like Lisa Simpson's haircut

..or how about some double sided tape on the back of the material along the exposed edges? I use this technique to stick down ribbon on to cards.

I have some 3mm/6mm/12mm in my craft store if you think it's a good idea for your project (although I don't know if you need to stick down your material/what on to so might be a suitable theory!)

You can also get pinking wheel cutters now, I use one to cut all my fabric that I sell so it dosen't fray and it seems to work on all fabric, even muslin and again you can get all different sizes i.e the smaller the design the smaller the wheel.

Never heard of those before. are they expensive?

Sorry I should have said rotary cutter mine is a prym, they are about £12.00 upwards and then you can get placement blades
Also Fiskas do one and I think the most popular one is made by olfa.
Mine was given to me by my wholesalers, but I think my mum got hers from Hobby craft
