So why did I get an email asking for payment? (Which eBid will not allow me to do... now what, wait to be suid for 8pence?

The emailed invoice routine obviously needs an adjustment to highlight that it's for information only if under the minimum payment amount. Assuming it doesn't have any such text that you've missed? No, you're not going to be sued over 8p, of course. :-)
