Thread: Church service sheet from 1936

Default Church service sheet from 1936

Hi, in an old book I found a church service thing. I am not sure what they are called as I am not a church goer, so can someone tell me what they are called please. I've attached a scan. I was just wondering if they are collectable. this one is from Westminster Abbey and dated Whit Sunday May 31st 1936.

Is it worth anything at all do you think?

    TIA!

It is (in the US) usually called an Order of Worship. I would expect it to be collectible, especially due to its age and location. No clue what it is worth, tho. Someone else will be along who might know more. It might appeal to people who collect items from Westminster Abbey, churches in general, old paper items, historical items, or even genealogists who had family attending or serving in that church. Best of luck......

People collect the strangest things, so why not this? Can you find out anything about the signature? That could be of interest. It made me laugh though when I read: not to be taken away....

Thanks, both of you! Order of service! Thats it, just couldnt remember. I did used to get taken to church by my mother but that was many years ago!

I noticed the 'Not to be taken away' bit but it says at the morning or afternoon service so one must assume this church goer went to the evening service! For their souls sake!

The sig just seems to say Glad or Glacl to me, what do you think it says?

Edit: Thanks to wiki I found a list of the deans of Westminster Abbey and the chap in charge in 1936 was called William Foxley Norris so its not his sig. Got to say thats about as far as I will get with that I think.

Makes sense, probably not going to add to the value

I believe it is Order of WORSHIP, not service. Also, I agree that it says Glad (short for Gladys??) maybe someone took one home for her.

Yes, sorry, worship not service. Anyway, searching the bay worldwide and open/closed listings reveals nothing similar. So I cant price it at all. I live in hope that someone on here can give me some idea. Otherwise I guess I'll just have to stick it up for auction on the site that takes 10% and makes me use Paypal. Not that there is much choice with that anymore anyway.

I would go with the original Order of Service. That's what they were referred to and invoiced as when I arranged a funeral recently - and also what was printed on them. Unless Order of Worship is what they are called when produced by a church...

Google would indicate that both terms are perfectly valid.

Yep, and searches on the bay work for both. I'll just list it using both terms.

If anyone has any idea what its worth please give me a nod. Or any dealer that I can email.

    TIA
