Tomorrow is July 4th, Independence Day in the USA! Time for BBQ, fireworks, and sober thoughts too.
On this day in 1776, a brave group of ex-patriots (all of English, Welsh, Scots, Irish heritage, some UK born, others US born), signed a document declaring American's independence from the crown. Years of war followed (Treaty of Paris finally signed in 1783)!
Very special document still on display in Washington DC: Thomas Jefferson (North Wales UK has a plaque commemorating his parent's birthplace), wrote the document in little more than two weeks. John Hancock signed his name BIG so the King could read it without his glasses. All knew it was a dangerous act but in signing it pledged their "sacred honor" to their new independent country.
No secret message on the back for you movie fans!!
Interesting link http://www.ushistory.org/Declaration/ has copy of the Declaration, the background of each signer, and a timetable of the Revolutionary War, battles, etc.
So happy 4th of July USA!!!
