Thread: Gazza - Not sure if this is a glitch or an expected behaviour

  1. #1

Question Gazza - Not sure if this is a glitch or an expected behaviour

I was using basic search & used the words Buster Lloyd Jones & got zero results, so I looked on google shopping, to my surprise I got a result from an eBid seller.
The seller had put Buster Lloyd-Jones in the title.
I tried searching eBid again using Buster Lloyd-Jones & the book was shown in results, is there a way you can tweak search to cover situations like this?

    Gothicina.

I assume the search is being read as items with Buster AND Lloyd BUT NOT Jones in the title - due to the inclusion of the hyphen.

I though that problem with eBid's search engine had been fixed ages ago. The hyphen should only be treated as an exclusion term if it is preceded by a space i.e. Buster Lloyd -Jones

Maybe they have reintroduced the bug with the new search engine?

We've been having a bit of a battle with hyphenated words but this a very good example for us to work on, thanks for pointing it out.

    No problem,
in this case the seller still got her sale, so it all worked out OK

    Hardly rocket science.

A hyphen preceded by a space (unless it is the first character in the search string) and immediately followed by a word indicates an exclusion term.

Any other occurrence is treated as a literal hyphen.

    So:

    Buster Lloyd-Jones = Literal
Buster Lloyd - Jones = Literal
    Buster Lloyd -Jones = Exclusion
    -Jones Buster Lloyd = Exclusion

I have noticed that if I search eBid UK for pincushion and pin cushion I get completely different numbers of auctions. Pincushion is the more common spelling but pin cushion isn't actually wrong. Is the search not sophisticated enough to recognise that people are looking for the same item with both spellings? If not how does it cope with the recently discussed jewellery v. jewelry problem?

I tried again just over a year later & still got the same results,
Search for buster lloyd jones found 0 auctions
Search for buster lloyd-jones found 3 auctions

If I put a space between d & the hyphen it acts as a minus, as it should.
Search for buster lloyd -jones found 1 auctions
