One lady bought an item from me and then sent an email that she wanted a matching set of four. Of course I only had the one that was listed, so she asked me to cancel her purchase. Not possible, of course, so I had to go through the invoice reminders/negative feedback process to get my FVF fee back. She was not happy. As a person who sometimes makes mistakes because of careless reading, I understand that this can happen. I changed her feedback to neutral later, because she did communicate with me and I knew this was not a malicious act.

I think this would be a good option to have in these rare cases. There's a big difference between someone who buys something and disappears, and someone who made an honest mistake.

While hobbyists can probably afford to make their own mind up about whether or not they choose to accept a cancellation, most good business sellers will say that no such choice exists. So, as has been said several times now, it really doesn't matter *why* a cancellation happens, but the fact is the facility is needed. Really, really, really. People who prefer not to accept cancellations don't have to use the function and are free to continue as they do now, so I don't see any real reason for objecting.

Please, Gazza, can we have a cancellation routine that's available for SELLERS to use if they so choose?

Something to keep in mind is the U.S. "cooling off period" law . . .

It is a federal law that buyers have the right to cancel any purchase that cost $25 or more within three days. I don't think internet sales are included (yet). If they start getting enough complaints from citizens, I wouldn't be surprised to see them added.

Some of the large companies that I regularly buy from online tell me my sale can be canceled, although the time period is usually 24 hours instead of three days. If the law ever does get applied to online sales, it would be a major problem for large automated systems that process sales with almost no human intervention.

And if that happens, the "Cancel" option will be legally required by U.S. sellers on eBid.

In UK, bought as opposed to bid on items also bring with them the legal right to cancel or return and I would much rather cancel than have a return (I'm not going to get my postage back, am I?).

And.. to say it again... I don't care WHY someone wants to cancel a purchase from any other seller, I just want the facility for MY sales.

As traffic increases (and it sure is increasing if my sales are any measure), we will need this more and more.

A sale this evening included a mistake by the buyer. I certainly need to be able to cancel that sale - I do not want to send the payment reminders to this lady. She might take offence. She has already explained very politely that she was confused by the unfamiliar format of ebid listings.
