Thread: Books you read when you were growing up.

  1. #1

Default Books you read when you were growing up.

Yesterday for some totally inexplicable reason the title of a book that I read when I was in my early teens, popped into my head.

Couldn't remember the authors name, or much about the story, just the title "No Medals for Guy" & it was a Children's Book Club Edition

They are asking between £15.00 & £23.00 for that edition when I looked it up online, don't think I'll be buying a copy, to see if I remember it.

There is another book I can remember part of the synopsis of, & would live to identify the title & author.
I would have read it sometime between 1965 & 1971 (It was in the school Library). The main characters were a girl called Nicky (or Mickey) who was in her teens, & her governess / companion / guardian. The plot was akin to Josephine Tey's Brat Farrar, or Mary Stewart's Ivy Tree.
    Any Ideas?

I still enjoy books for younger readers and I'm 50+ now.

As a kid I remember reading all the Anne books by L.M. Montgomery, Nancy Drew, The Incredible Journey, The Outsiders etc.

Right now I'm reading Howard Pyles 'King Arthur'. I just love that old English writing style. I have to admit that I'm a big Harry Potter fan too.

Also, I think it's time to revisit the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I haven't read that since I was a teen.

I can't believe I am reading this thread just at this moment in time. After picking my Grandson up from school this afternoon we were talking about which book his teacher is reading him at the moment and he told me it was Fantastic Mr Fox which we have already read together but as he likes it he doesn't mind. We were discussing books I read as a child and I just couldn't remember the title of one book but remembered the names of all the characters and that it was about a journey. Thank you Firstgreenisgold for filling in that little gap that would have bugged me until I managed to bring it to the front of my mind through all the every day clutter that gets in the way of the really important stuff.

    Hi Bluejypsy,

    You're welcome. :-)

I notice that you are from Winsford. My grandfather was born at Davenham in 1875 and my kinfolk (SHAW / RATHBONE and connections) on that side of the family were from that neck of the woods.

(As you can tell, genealogy is another of my hobbies.) lol
