    Default A thought on advertising

We often see people on here saying that ebid should advertise to get buyers. I have always though that would be nice, but not possible due to the high cost of nationwide advertising. Fees would have to be increased (no thanks)

Think of Facebook - I don't think they ever advertised ! It was word of mouth and media articles and hype that got them going. I think it will be the same with ebid. They are on a roll and have overtaken Myspace, and many people are using Facebook more than Google !

Facebook (annd Twitter) are mentioned on tv every day. Just like ebay was years ago.

That only works if something happens to attract media attention. Simply being an auction site is not newsworthy. The other way in is becoming a part of youth culture and subject to peer influence. I can't see eBid becoming anything like that.

Auction sites are now old hat and the free advertising they got simply from existing is now gone.

So why not make it newsworthy, how about taking polls to see what sellers would be in favor of donating x amount of sales for x amount of time to a specific charity we get enough sellers in,spread the word and maybe we get it out there that were the site trying to make a difference or something of that nature.
I agree just being an auction site is not newsworthy but if we do something that no one else does or has done perhaps we can attract attention
Just spitballing here, but could be a start

Well the first big eBay story I recall was some girl auctioning off her virginity.

I think the fraud squad might get involved if anyone here tried it.

Depends... isn't there a minimum financial threshold for them to take an interest?

Hmmmm......... I wonder if I could....... Na, I wouldn't get any bids. Besides we are trying to attract buyers, not send them away by the thousands, gouging their eyes out as they go!!

    Lightbulb

Hi there guys, this is the first time that I have left a posting. I came over to ebid from the other side over 12 months ago, and to be honest trade has been slow. On the other side I had frequent business but that was because the 'other' has been allowed to dominate the world over wityh its auction site. I'm proud to be a melmber of the ebid family and fully endorse ebid. In order to try and help boost sales, I have endeavoured to get as many listings on as possible. For every new customer that I receive I send out a personalisehd business card, so that they can never forget who I am or what I sell. But the best bit of advice that I can give is that I have got my younger brother to make adverts and blog about my site on you tube. So for instance if I'm selling Doctor who trading cards, little Chrissie W will have the theme tune in the background while there are images of what I have for sale on display. He then names it as Doctor Who advert. It gets googled and bobs your uncle I get a few sales. They then look at Doc Who and at the same time see what else i have for sale and hopefully they will buy other things. Obviously because ebid have no major advertising capaigning at the mo we have to rely on word of mouth, and I hope that by what i am doing it can give 'word of mouth' a leg up. Feel free to click on me to see if i have anything that you wish to buy. Another idea is that rather than us just posting our quotes here, is if we spend five or ten mins a day looking at each other quotes and possibly buy something from each other at the same time.

Best wishes from Cazza in Pembrokeshire

Have you looked around the forums to see all the previous discussions on this, and researched what we already do? Do you know what charity involvement we already have, and the projects we've undertaken in the past? Maybe something in there will spark off an idea for you.
