Thread: Collectible Pocket Knife?

    Default Collectible Pocket Knife?

    Hi everyone! I seem to be spending a LOT of time in these forums lately! I was wondering, can I list a collectible pocket knife for sale on eBid?

    Not at the moment. I put in a request at support to re-consider , but they advised me as well to please not list knives for the time being.. (They are illegal or something in U.K. and it's a U.K company )

    There's no category to list them at the moment.. I keep meaning to start a new thread and poll in the new categories section of forum but keep forgetting

    Legal exceptions for carrying a knife

    Under certain circumstances, it's legal to be in possession of a knife in public:
    • If it's a tool of the trade (i.e. you work in catering or carpentry);
    • For religious reasons (i.e. a Sikh kirpan);
    • If it's a penknife (pocket or folding knife) less than three inches long (although it may be considered offensive if carried for the purpose of causing injury or harm).
    I googled this, but of course eBid may have their own rules and regulations for auctioning such items, for safety reasons.

    yeah - wow.. to us Americans it seems incredible in this day and age.. back in Rural PA, you can walk right into the local BANK with a huge 16-inch hunting knife strapped to your belt (9 inch blade 7 inch handle ) and no one even bats an eye.. even when it isn't hunting season..

    I believe Guns are also not allowed to be carried in UK either (Although I think you're allowed to possess certain firearms for hunting /sporting purposes, correct? just not handguns? )

    Thing is, since this is a U.K company and subject to U.K laws, allowing knives to be listed (even the legal ones) on the website probably amounts to "facilitating" the sale.. so can't really blame them for prohibiting ALL knives from being listed (other than chef's/cooking cutlery) since of course, un-ethical sellers will always find a way to work around the restriction and post a hunting knife as a "pocket knife" or some such .. until someone notices the listing, takes a closer look and reports it to get it removed..

    OK I think I'll head on over to categories and write up a post while Im waiting to see if I can get my NinjaLister data recovered..

    The problem is that UK law restricts the sale of knives to those under a certain age and the seller is responsible for ascertaining that the buyer is of age. There is no way to do that via an eBid sale.

    That law does not of course apply to the US but eBid's policy appears to be that if the advertising or sale of something is illegal in one country it serves, then that takes precedence of its legality in any other and the listing is not allowed.

    Not all knives have the restriction on sale in the UK. I don't think pocket/pen (i.e. folding) knives are subject to the law. eBid did use to allow their listing until quite recently. As usual a minority spoiled it by abusing it and listing illegal weapons. eBid found it impossible to police and so introduced the blanket ban on all knives and blades.

    Offensive Weapons act 1996: http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts1996..._19960026_en_1
    Knives Act 1997: http://www.opsi.gov.uk/Acts/acts1997..._19970021_en_1

    Like all laws they are a minefield to navigate and subject to numerous amendments so finding the actual current law in force is not easy. You usually only find out what the actual law is about 10 minutes before the cell door traps your fingers.

    Handguns are only allowed at certain venues like the Olympics, and you have to have a special dispensation to even own one, never mind use it. There are also very very stringent laws governing the owning of ANY rifle or gun (except air rifles).
