For US sellers, I will pass on that I use old priority cardboard flat rate envelopes for wrapping the books. It is lightweight, smooth, and wraps around the book well. Idea is to keep the edges and corners from getting smashed.

I don't use padded bags, I use plain shipping envelopes.

I do sometimes add a layer of plastic for items shipping Internationally. Always, when asked (I have been a couple of times when the buyers knew their delivery "issues" ) and occasionally just when gut instinct suggested it. But not as a matter of course. No soggy books so far, but if I had a regular free supply of suitable plastic I probably would do it more often.

Self-adhesive specialist book wrap. I've never gone that route because I have a healthy supply of free non-adhesive sort, so I just need to buy tape.

Paperbacks I send in padded envelopes with cardboard inserts, hardbacks are generally wrapped in bubblewrap (free from supermarkets) and cardboard boxes with packing to stop the book moving around.
Cheaper hardbacks usually go the same way as paperbacks.
Never had a complaint about packing in 11 years.
Boxes cost me about 30p each from a local packing firm, and the whole of the cardboard box and padding weighs about 150gm.
I hate to receive a fairly expensive book (about £10.00+) in padded envelopes, never buy from them again.
As a collector, the condition of books is extremely important and I'd much rather pay a little extra for safe packing.

Me, too! And I've managed to stay clear of book sales, etc., for quite some time, but now that spring is just around the corner (hopefully!), I've been looking around for any good ones. And what did my wandering eyes find but one of my absolute FAV book sales to be held in Sunriver (north of here) in March...WHEEeeeee!!! I absolutely adore this particular one as this community is strictly upper-crusters who 'donate' their books for the sale. And when I say upper-crusters...well, let's just say you couldn't touch a home there for less than $1.5-2.5 million (makes me sick!) But hey! I'll buy their 'throwaways', which BTW, I've never even seen one with a dogear, etc.....So I'm counting the days don't you know!
