Never done a complete format/reinstall, except for installing a newer version of windows or a component failure.. We do run a monthly defrag though. If you are in the habit of creating/installing lots of programmes/files defrag helps a lot.

my computer was so slow this last few weeks it was almost at a standstill (and I tried EVERYTHING to speed it up, including uninstalling programs, defragging, etc.) So I did at speed test at http://www.speedtester.bt.com/ (if you're not with bt then any other speed test site will do). It WAS my connection speed and BT found the problem on the line so I writing this at double speed! lol

we use that when we get a problem.
Our internet problems seem to be irregular though due to out of date/exhausted wiring. Have had my broadband go down while BT engineers are in the street trying to fix neighbours' problems. One of them made a comment along the lines of: "all the wiring from the exchange to here needs to be replaced"; but in the grand scheme of things they won't do a thing until we or any of the neighbours launches the next complaint.

I agree the programs seem to cause more problems than they solve.

I know how to reinstall but what do you mean by format?
