Default How do you speed up a computer?

Mine is taking ages, and I'm no whizz kid, so simply answers only please.

    It all depends.
Has it always been slow or is it slowing down?
If it's always been slow you may need some more RAM.
If it's becoming slower, maybe your hard disk is very fragmented or the inside of your case is filthy and it's overheating or a dozen or so other reasons

Not enough information to even start offering suggestions.

A point for anyone running Windows XP with Comodo anti-virus... Recent updates to Comodo are causing problems and making program startup VERY slow.

Sometimes it's down to clutter - try downloading ccleaner

Download and install Advanced Windows Care, it's free and it works a treat.

    You can download it HERE.

I have never found any of those programs (registry cleaners, speedup your PC, etc.) do any good. All the ones I have tried either slow down the PC or introduce problems.

I prefer simple system maintenance and (if not forced more often) a complete format and reinstall once a year.

Me neither, except the one I posted the link to, it's excellent.

Formating every 12 months seems a little OTT, I never format unless there's a problem.
