    Default Windows update

I've been running on windows XP for the last 4 years or so. Over the last couple of months, every time I shut down there is 1 windows update to be installed. Whether I install it or not it is always there next time I turn off my pc.

I've just updated to IE8 with all the other updates, and as soon as I shut down this Bl***y update is there again.

If I ignore it for a couple of weeks windows then installs and tries to restart my computer while I am working!!

Does anyone know of a fix for this before the PC goes through the window.

    What's the update?

If you don't want it - have you tried telling Windows Update to ignore it?

Again...which update is it? Knowing that might help a solution.

Do you have Auto Update switch on?

You could try visiting http://www.update.microsoft.com and see if that clear the error.

How are you with editing the registry? Something you are happy to do or something you wouldn't try?

How do I find out what update it is?
Not too keen about the registry, auto update checkbox is unchecked.
Just restarted computer and straight away getting 'updates are available click to install'

Are you sure it's a Windows update and not something else such as Java or Adobe? They can be buggers for causing problems.

There are a couple of friendly tools you could try using -
    Dial-a-fix : http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix and http://www.lunarsoft.net/downloads/c...tech-utilities
    Autopatcher : http://www.autopatcher.com/

Two very useful programs for sorting out troublesome Windows! You can't really go wrong with them if you just accept the default choices and selections they present to you.

You normally get the option to not install and ignore updates. At least the way I have then set up. If you are set up to auto download and install (not a good idea) then you may not get asked.

If you go to Windows Update via the link at post #4 on this thread you can tell WU not to offer you the update again. That may not solve things if it has already been downloaded though. In that case you could try changing your WU settings to ask before installing to see if that gives retrospective control over the installation of previous downloads.

Hi been away from computer for 24hrs Thanks for replies.
I have checked on WU and this seems to be the problem one, which has been successfully installed about 20 times.

    Update for Windows XP (KB967715)
Install this update to resolve an issue in which AutoRun features were not correctly disabled. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

It installs an updated version of shell32.dll in the system32 directory.
