it might be easier to take up cross stich first and work your way up.... not that I ever got further than cross stich (found I enjoyed it so stuck with it)... the only problem is I always have 3 on the go and 100's to do and still buy pattens if I like them

Me too -I have them everywhere!! Currently working on Halloween and Christmas ... not sure which year though
Mind you my mother did embroidery - no hoops, she just stitched away, anything from aprons, tablecloths, towels.

I have done embroidery work for many years. I found it to be very relaxing and the finished projects very beautiful. I gave many as gifts and have some framed in my home. Starting with a stamped pattern is the easiest. I was lucky to have books passed down from my grandmother and mother as well. I have some for sale in my ebid "A Stich In Time Saves Nine" shop. One in particular you might like is Crewel Embroidery It shows many stitches with large pictures of how to. Very good reference book. Good luck with your endeavors. Happy stitching.

my mother took it up as a hobby years ago... and when I got M.E (C.F.S for our american friends) I took it up as a way of helping remove the stiffness in my fingers

But it is the same with any hobby. I always have a little project to carry to auctions to knit (baby hats because they are easy), something a little fancier to do when light is good (knitting with beads), and when a big project like a baby blanket for the latest new baby on the way for friend or family. It is fun to go back and forth, and fun to look forward to all our future projects too (someday when we get the time). As long as a hobby stays fun, keep doing it.
