Thread: I need a good story writer. This could benefit eBid.

  1. #1

Default I need a good story writer. This could benefit eBid.

I know this post is a bit long but please read it through if you have time.

As I was reading this story I had an idea...

"American anger at the release of the Lockerbie bomber has put immense strain on the so-called 'special relationship' with Britain.

The U.S. blames Scotland and Britain equally for the decision to free Megrahi. And there was nationwide horror at the sight of the bomber being given a hero's welcome on his return to Libya.

From President Obama, to the relatives of those killed on Pan Am Flight 103, to the man on the street, they are dumbfounded by the move.

The finger of suspicion has been pointed at the British government by U.S. politicians who believe the real reason behind the release is being kept secret.

Senator Charles Schumer asked in Monday's New York Post: 'Was there a quid pro quo here?

'There are now rumours that this despicable terrorist was let free only eight years into his prison term in return for Britain getting some oil contracts in Libya.'

His comments appeared in a piece under the headline: PM's Lockerbie Secret - Brown In 'Oil Talks' With Loon Libyan, which criticised the Prime Minister for refusing to take a break from his holiday to answer questions about his contact with Gaddafi over the 'compassionate' release.

America's former UN Ambassador John Bolton said: 'There is a lot of speculation that this was really a decision not made by the justice authorities but by Gordon Brown."

The full story can be read here.

Currently the politicians are doing their usual thing of point scoring, saying what they think the voters want to hear, and saying whatever they think will get them the most press/media coverage and the media are falling over each other to find any politician willing to say anything that they can twist to show an apparent rift between Britain and America.

Given the above, my idea is that maybe we could create some publicity for the eBid and the YDC by sending out a topical, feel good, story to various papers and tv/radio stations.

I thought something along the lines of - Brits and American public work together help cleaner put an end cruelty to children - followed by a story which explains that despite the politicians being focused on pointing fingers at each other and falling out the public are more concerned with working together to help others and do some good. If the story focused on how the average Brit/American are using eBid and the YDC to raise funds for the NSPCC and other charities then I think it could make a good story. Or even a story of how Americans have teamed up with Brits to support a cleaner in a Yorkshire village in his bid to raise funds to put an end to child abuse. The possabilities are endless, the press love stories about folk who are in a low social position but rise to do something unusual.

I'm sure a short, well written, story showing how the British and American public are rising above the politicians to help those children in desperate need of our help would stand a good chance of being picked up by the press or even the media.

I am not good enough to write such a story so I was wondering if anyone else would like to write one?

I'd need the completed story by this Saturday night so that I could send it out to the various papers and tv/radio stations on Sunday. That way when they checked the auctions everyone will have listed and the number of YDC auctions would look healthier and more impressive. The story needs to concentrate on the co-operation between British and American people, the YDC auctions, the charity, and the good that they are doing while the politicians are busy slagging each other off.

    Anyone interested?

I believe that this could gain some media interest if it is done properly and we pull at the heart strings in the right way.

I agree with Fair. You have posted plenty of well-reasoned, thoughtful messages on eBid. You seem especially able to step into heated posts and add something which addresses all sides of an issue, calms without blaming, and generally reframes things so the discussion can move forward or die a natural death. The original post of this thread is thoughtful and well-written, looks very much like the bones of a winning article to me

You might not bring an alphabet of academic degrees to the writing desk, but you bring personal experience, clear thinking and a big heart. What more does anyone need?

Okay here goes, I've not spell checked it or owt yet, so it's just a rough draft at the moment.

    ...................

American and British citizens show the politicians how to do it.

Britain is facing growing American criticism over the release of the Lockerbie bomber and British oppostion parties are jumping on the bandwagon as the media reports on a rift between Britain and the US. Gordon Brown is attempting to distance himself from the decision by the Scottish justice secretary as the other MP's and American politicians continue to point their fingers and voice their strongly-held views.

Meanwhile, British and US citizens are leaving the politicians to it while they come together to support a council cleaner in Yorkshire raise money for the NSPCC. Frank Carr, a 47 year old grandad from Slaithwaite near Huddersfield, decided that he wanted to do something useful with his summer break this year. Knowing that Frank supports charities his daughters suggested that he had a go at the NSPCC's 25 miles challenge walk in the Yorkshire Dales. Frank registered for the challenge walk and his family and friends rallied round to help him get sponsors for the walk, within a few weeks Frank had reached his target of £250 and was very pleased. But when he happened to menton that he was doing the charity walk on Ebid.net's online forums his sponsorhsip suddenly doubled. Not happy with doubling the amount of sponsorship the British and US Ebid members decided that they would use the monthly fun charity auctions, known as the YDC, to further boost Frank's sponsorship.

"I am absolutely amazed by the support given to me by the British and US people. These people are just ordinary folk who have decided to support me, not out of self interest but for the greater good of others. Imagine if all our politicians acted in the same way, the world would be a different place." Frank went on to add, "It is very humbling to see these strangers from both sides of the Atlantic work together and put themselves out to help a lowly council cleaner do his bit to end cruelty to children. These people could teach our politicians a thing or two. I know that the children would thank them all for their unselfish and brilliant support, it's something that I will never forget."

The NSPCC is the UK's leading charity specialising in child protection and the prevention of cruelty to children. It is the only children's charity with statutory powers, enabling it to act to safeguard children. The charity relies on public support and desperately needs more funds.

The challenge walk is a 25 miles circular walk which starts and finishes in Clapham in the Yorkshire Dales. The walk includes having to scale Ingleborough peak, Yorkshire's most famous flat top mountain which stands at 2,373ft tall.

The charity auctions run from Friday 28th of August to Sunday 6th of September on ebid.net, a complete list of the auctions can be found at www.YDCauctions.co.uk or anyone wishing to sponsor Frank direct can do so at www.JustGiving.com/FCarr

Frank's last word about the transatlantic sponsorship, "I hope the politicians see this and take note. More can be accomplished if we work together rather than working against each other. Your citizens obviously know this so why don't you?"

    .......................

    Tips or advice welcome.

Do you have any idea of the publication guidelines where you plan to submit this? How many words they want, etc?

    lol, cheers lass.

No, no idea because I'm going to send it to all the national newspapers, magazines, radio and tv stations. I will add a footnote with my contact details and say that the story can be edited to fit the slot that they have for it if they wish to use it.
