this is what my battery meter say's on my lappy, I've now had to run directly from the mains, so am I to assume that my lappy battery is now completely knackered? Its been like this since last night.

I would say yes but make sure the terminals are clean and positioned properely first. Contact is everything.

It happened to me a while ago. I just used mine on the mains while the battery was loading at the same time.

So should I remove the battery then whilst I'm running from the mains, as it still shows 0% available (plugged in, not charging)

You should always run a laptop with the battery installed. If possible, find a replacement battery (or laptop). I don't know if running on mains with a dead battery is technically any better than no battery at all, but the battery forms a part of the power circuit so should be there.

If you always run your laptop off the mains then the battery tends to slowly die, eventually it won't hold any charge at all. Rechargeable batteries like to be used so it's advisable to run your laptop on the battery until it's nearly out of juice and then plug in to the mains adaptor to recharge fully, do this about once a month. Even if you use it on the battery a little bit and then connect up to the mains, a complete discharge cycle is still necessary to maintain a healthy charge capacity.

Your correct with always running a battery in a laptop but its also a wise idea to replace it after it no longer charges. Old battries tend to do unexpected things like self destruct with no notice. As the internals dry and can no longer allow the proper flow of electrons, they need to eventually reamerge some where else and its always the weakest point of the battery. i.e. the side facing inwards.

Thats probably where I went wrong then, always had my lappy on charge while the battery was in, however this morning before I switched my lappy on it came up with 0% available (plugged in, charging) so I switched my lappy on and it changed to 0% available (plugged in not charging).

My lappy is only a year old and the extended warranty has now passed.
