    Default Sod it!

Can anyone tell me the easiest way to dispose of mounds of sods, please? I'm in the process of digging over the garden with a view to laying new turf. I have amassed a lot of sods in scraping off the old, mostly dead, turf. I don't think I'm allowed to put them in the recycling wheelie bin. Any ideas?

have you got anyone reasonably close to you that is doing some sort of development - house, landscaping etc - they may be able to use them in the grass verge at the side of the driveway or something.

Perhaps someone who keeps livestock may be able to use them in a small corner of a field. You could always put a small add in the local paper - free for someone who collects.

Freecycle. Anybody in your area trying to build up a bank or fill a dip in their garden will be glad of it.

Thank you both. Good ideas. I shall see what can be done along these lines.

Another idea would be to put it all into a composting type bin or container and turn it into compost. If you don't have a use for compost - do any of your neighbours maintain a veg or flower patch??

We don't have space for a rockery, but thanks for the idea. Composting might be an option, though. I've been meaning to start for some time. Ta!

Question sod keeps growing in composter???

I compost but am no expert. But if you throw sod into your compost bin without tearing it apart, letting it dry out, etc won't it just keep growing?

Sod is very tough, you either have to remove it, or kill it if enlarging the garden. If you turn it under, with a tiller, it just grows back.

My mother used to compost sod. We dug up lots on the farm. First she let it sit out of the rain until it was bone dry to kill the grass and weeds. Then she'd compost it, along with all the stuff from the kitchen and garden. The worms and microscopic bugs broke down everything.

Terrific, the theory has been scientifically confirmed, your mom did it!

Probably she did the easiest thing, let grass die, and then it is ready for the compost heap, I suppose you could also do the old newspaper trick, you cover the grass with a thick layer and it croaks in a few days (I have done it to clear a section of garden).

    Thank you for the info.
