Thread: A new catagory for finished cross stitch pieces

  1. #91

    Default

Hi, we have been & are on vacation so I have only looked in from time to time, Thank you ladies for keeping this up front....hopefully in front of their eyes. I really don't care how they do it...I just wanted a good place to list my completed counted cross stitch pieces. A place where buyers might find them without searching through hundreds of "other" items. I thought all they had to do was insert "completed" into their already existing sub cats...but..lol...what Do I know....I am still waiting to hear...Come on guys....Please!!

My specific thoughts are this, we are not being as specific as Gazza wants us to be so that ebid can make the changes.

    Here is the way it looks now;

    Sewing & Embroidery
    Accessories (355)
    Buckles (27)
    Buttons (564)
    Cross Stitch (2643)
    Embroidery (190)
    Fabrics (920)
    Lace (152)
    Motifs (106)
    Other (174)
    Patterns (3595)
    Quilting (25)
    Ribbons (566)
    Sewing Machines (96)
    Spinning (3)
    Tapestry (35)
    Textiles (10)
    Threads (428)
    Trimmings (231)

    Less

This is too mixed a subcategory, and I was surprised that spinning ended up there that REALLY does not fit at all.

So I think that these items should be removed:

cross stitch (a form of embroidery)

    embroidery (duh, embroidery)

    Tapestry (a form of embroidery

spinning (a yarn making category, this one is WAY off)

    And propose that:

    1. Sewing/Embroidery subcategory become just SEWING.

    2. Cross stitch/Embroidery become its own subcategory called EMBROIDERY

    3. spinning be removed and moved to a yarn category? as roving used to spin is actually used by some to knit. Its wool and does not belong in sewing AT ALL.

    4. Under the new subcategory EMBROIDERY would be the following sub sub categories:
    Cross stitch
    Embroidery
    Tapestry

    5. Leave all the rest of the sub cats in SEWING

    6. for the three EMBROIDERY items, put in sub sub cats like this:

    Cross stitch:
    Accessories (hoops, needles, frames)
    Floss
    Fabric (even weave)
    Finished pieces
    Kits to stitch
    Other
    Patterns (not books)
    stamped cross stitch

    Embroidery:
    Accessories (hoops, needles, frames)
    Floss
    Fabric (even weave, linen)
    Finished pieces
    Kits to stitch
    Other
    Patterns (not books)
    stamped embroidery

    Tapestry:
    Accessories (needles, frames)
    Canvas
    Finished pieces
    Kits to stitch
    Other
    Patterns (not books)
    Wool/floss

I am sure it needs some corrections, but maybe if we all agree with the first part (remove cross stitch, embroidery, tapestry) to own subcat under Crafts, then we can move ahead and decide the other breakdowns. Then maybe each of us can copy the sub sub parts and add/substract, and then in the end we will end up with the specific changes we want made? How is that for a plan?

Sorry but NO - I do not do embroidery. I do not do any form of embroidery.
Sorry but NO - I do not do tapestry. I do not do any form of tapestry.

But I do CROSS-STITCH - totally different - I thought the point of this was to get cross-stitch its own category.

What would really be nice is:
    Crafts & Sewing:
    Cross Stitch:
    Cards:
    Finished cross stitch:
    Kits:
    Other:
    Patterns:
    Stamped cross stitch:

I have my cross stitch cards listed under Cross Stitch "Cards". My bookmarks, magnets, finished pieces, small framed cross stitch pictures', are listed under "other". I feel they are getting lost among the fabrics, thread, needles, blank cards, etc.

Right now there are 496 items, listed under Cross Stitch.. Other..

I see you have Needlepoint & Plastic Canvas as secondary catagories under Crafts & Sewing. Would it be possible to bring Cross Stitch up as a secondary catagory also? I think there is, or will be in the future, a lot more cross stitch items listed.

Thanks so much for your consideration in this matter.
    --------------
I am bringing my original post forward...this is what I had in mind....I think it would work just fine....

There are many more items listed in "other" now then when I first started this thread..

Maybe I am not making this clear or explaining just right...

Also, don't you think there should be some place to list cross stitch supplies other then with the finished, completed items. Maybe you should have a sub cat called "supplies" or is that what "other" is for...when I look for my cross stitch cards I made, there are about 40+ listings for blank cards.

Under "supplies" you could list all the sub cats like needles, aida cloth, floss, blank cards etc..

I am running out of ideas & I'm not sure administration has any interest in making these changes we are asking for...

Sadly, the sellers on eBid don't necessarily share our specialist knowledge as the fat quarter ( a piece of fabric of specific dimensions) section that you and I use correctly is chock full of fabric cushion panels of all shapes and sizes which have their own section "panels" elsewhere!

It is such a shame that the crafts categories and particularly the sewing and embroidery section are such an untidy muddle and it is so frustrating not to receive any responses to polite requests for changes.

Gazza, may we be told what is happening, please? I dare say you find the whole subject of sewing very boring (I'm not madly interested in computing myself!) but it is popular with others and we could be attracting more sellers and buyers. There are people with specialist knowledge here who would be happy to help sort out the mess but like hopeful I am wondering why there is a section for new category requests when those suggestions are ignored for months and months on end.

It is very apparent to everyone contributing to this thread that a section for finished cross stitch pieces is essential to hopeful and others. If there is no intention to grant her request perhaps she could be told? If there is a major revamp of categories already under way or planned for the very near future maybe we can be told that? Please could we have some kind of clue.....?

    I disagree ... gently!
Cross-stitch is a form of embroidery, as is tapestry (also known as half cross-stitch). In fact, I've just checked the dictionary to be sure and it defines embroidery as any form of decorative needlework.
I have no objection to cross-stitch, tapestry and embroidery each having a subcategory under a category called Needlework, if you prefer? And I definitely think that needlepoint should be in that same category (I don't see why it is currently the only form of stitching to have its own category).

I think there should be one sub-subcategory under Needlework (or whatever you choose to call it) for accessories as there is some cross-over with needles, threads (floss), hoops etc., especially between cross-stitch and general embroidery.

And there could be a Completed sub-subcategory in each for finished cross-stitch, tapestry, etc.

    Otherwise, I like delta's breakdown.

Yes, but what is in sewing is cross stitch, embroidery and tapesty, all related, all can move together under the embroidery sub cat. Why wait until the embroidery people say, hey, this is in wrong section and go thru all this again. It is easier now for ebid to make a change as outlined and then have both sub cats correct and the way we want them.

Please look at the cross stitch and suggest sub sub cats that will make sense. I don't do it, so I don't know the best way to split them. If you see need for another sub sub cat, then now is the time to voice that on the thread.

We have talked and talked but gotten down to NO specifics. Now we have a base specific list, lets fine tune it and get this taken care of.

Maybe that is a solution for the sub category instead of calling it embroidery, call it NEEDLEWORK, then under it would be CROSS STITCH, EMBROIDERY, AND TAPESTRY. Under each would be the sub sub cats as mentioned.

Excellent suggestion. Now we are cookin'.

    4. Under the new subcategory EMBROIDERY (CHANGE TO NEEDLEWORK) would be the following sub sub categories:

    Cross stitch
    Embroidery
    Tapestry

    Cross stitch:
Accessories (hoops, needles, frames) (CHANGE TO SUPPLIES)
    Floss
    Fabric (even weave)
    Finished pieces (CHANGE TO COMPLETED)
    Kits to stitch
    Other
    Patterns (not books)
    stamped cross stitch

    Embroidery:
Accessories (hoops, needles, frames) (CHANGE TO SUPPLIES)
    Floss
    Fabric (even weave, linen)
    Finished pieces (CHANGE TO COMPLETED)
    Kits to stitch
    Other
    Patterns (not books)
    stamped embroidery

    Tapestry: (CHANGE TO READ TAPESTRY/NEEDLEPOINT)?????
Accessories (needles, frames) (CHANGE TO SUPPLIES)
    Canvas
    Finished pieces (CHANGE TO COMPLETED)
    Kits to stitch
    Other
    Patterns (not books)
    Wool/floss

I think this is what we have so far. Am a little worried about needlepoint, is it someplace else too or is tapestry the UK name for it (I hope so).

As mentioned I worry a bit about the cross over supplies, if I have needles that can be used for all three, where would I put them? Would floss go in all three places? People selling floss would have to list in two places? Is all the embroidery floss somewhere else so we can take it off here? The wool too?

Big question, would it behoove us to keep cross stitch and embroidery one sub cat as the sub sub categories are so close, or would it be too big?

    Keep ideas coming.

I just felt that as Needlepoint had it own catgory the others should too.

If they are going under a generic category heading such as 'Needlework' that is fine - we want people to find the categories easily
