One of the threads on greedbay was about the Italian post system, the message was that writing 'Librato Ustado' (I think) prominently on the packing, usually guaranteed safe delivery.
Can't verify, haven't posted a book there for a long while. I used to have more trouble with missing books in Australia, but nobody else seemed to have problems there.
