Thread: Can anyone define "Japan Silver"?

  1. #1

Default Can anyone define "Japan Silver"?

I have a pair of earrings I inherited from my grandmother. I know they're at least 80 years old. They're pendant earrings, set in Austrian crystals, with a screwback holder (not even sure that's what it's called). The screwback is set with larger crystals and marked on the back of the screw is "Japan Silver". I have no idea what this is, I don't even know if it's genuine silver or some other metal.

I searched the internet for a definition and found nothing. Does anyone know what this metal is?

My guess is that it was made in Japan and that it is silver. The 2 words don't go together.

Daniel & Arter of the Globe Nevada Silver Works,Birmingham, produced silver plate under the trade mark 'Japanese Silver'. They were in operation during the nineteenth century.

    HELLO !
JAPAN SILVER [ CAN BE, SOME OF IT] "TIBET SILVER". "TIBET SILVER" IS
REAL SILVER MIXED WITH A "ZINC BASED ALLOY". IT IS NON- TOXIC AND
MAKES THE PIECES STRONGER & LAST LONGER.
EXAMPLE: 24k vs. 14k in gold.
    Thanks ! & God Bless !

Actually, Tibet or Tibetan silver is a catch-all for a variety of 'white metal' alloys and frequently has no silver content at all. If there is silver present, it is generally less than 2%. Tibet silver is mainly made up of copper, nickel or zinc but may also contain tin, antimony and/or lead.
