Exclamation Too good to be true? Best avoid!

I have noticed that there has been an increase in the number of coin listings that are possibly fraudulent. I see several listings with coins with amazingly low prices and they are all from relatively new sellers.

At least on of the sellers had an account on a different auction site and his MO was to sell quite a few small items, then sell ONE large ticket coin (>$500) then list a whole pile of high cost coins and then make insurance claims for "lost" coins. He then got quite a few bad reviews and moved on, it appears he has moved here. I tried to get the seller to take photos of the coins, but he wouldn't or couldn't provide any photos except for those he downloaded from a major coin internet coin site.

I called the local Sheriff and was told to not send this man any money.

Anyway, be careful and remember if the price is low, make sure it isn't TOO low. $300-800 for a St. Gaudens $20 Double Eagle sounds GREAT until you find out you just sent a check to a scammer.

Yes, there are at least 2 sellers lisitng these 1 ounce coins or sets of coins. When the BuyNow price is about 30% less than the spot proce of gold, it is a little suspicious. One listing looks like he took a picture in a coin shop http://us.nine.ebid.net/perl/auction...ction=13444742

One of the sellers has dropped all his listings, except for a Sony DCR-SR85 Camcorder. I will be watching to see what he lists next.

Search for Gold Eagle or Gaudens and see who comes up.

Thanks for the info. I'm sure most of us "experienced" buyer/sellers would pick up on this pretty quickly, but newbies could easily be taken in. Will keep a close watch and report them if I get a chance.

my link in message #4 here... is Very helpful, telling you that if in doubt pay ONLY using a cc via paypal. Only pay with a credit card.. best to stay away though, do not look for trouble, 'cause it will find you.

It is always a good idea to use CC or Paypal or something that authenticates both the seller and the buyer.
Thanks for the article on how to avoid getting taken.
