No matter the sort order, for me the 'buy it' is always above auctions

Countdown Listings should always show first in search or browse
by time left to run (both BuyNow & Auctions),
    then Run Til Sold,
then on first bid again by time (until they get a bid then they revert to normal countdown listings).
BUT featured items come before everything else, so if somebody has paid for featured RunTilSold, they will show before non featured countdown, then again Featured Countdown will come before featured RunTilSold

Just browsed the US fine jewellery section, countdowns were showing first for me.

I think if there were a category for "Fine Jewelry>Gold" that included a definition of "All items in this category will have a minimum of 9kt and be set with natural mined gemstones" it might go a long way toward ensuring that the items there would meet that standard. It would be a good idea to have an additional category for the gold-plated, rolled-gold pieces.

Ah... you've changed your terminology. You're confusing "run till sold" and "buy now" - these are entirely different concepts. The latter is not related to the length of listing or the sort order, it just means there's a fixed price available either instead of, or as well as, the auction start price.

Just checking again, now it shows as you have said. Previously it had always showed as I said before. It had been where something ending in two seconds was on page three after a zillion "run til sold"s.

Obviously Gazza has been watching this thread and is looking for a consensus, and it has detoured off the original discussion. As someone who has bought high quality jewelry, and will probably never sell any, I'm summarizing what seem to be the majority opinions on this thread. I realize from reading the posts that there isn't going to be 100% agreement among the sellers, but these seem fair to me, and would make it easier for buyers to find exactly what we're looking for.

As I write this, there are 19,925 items listed in eBid's Fine Jewellery category. The first page has several CZ rings, a silver-plated charm bracelet, a gold-plated watch with leather straps . . . not what I expected to see.

Keep the existing "Fine Jewellery" category, but enforce these rules:
The metals must be 9KT or finer gold, Sterling silver or Platinum
    Only mined or natural stones
This would provide a home for such items as a $20,000 rope of genuine South Sea Black Pearls that doesn't have a clasp closure.

Add a "Fashion Jewellery" category, same subcategories as the current "Fine Jewellery" and "Costume Jewellery", with these rules:
Gold plated, gold filled, rolled gold, or silver plated settings
    Any natural or manmade stone
This would be a reasonable place for the high quality manmade stones, regardless of the metal, and semi-precious natural stones that are not set in the metals required for Fine Jewellery

Keep the existing "Costume Jewellery" category for everything that doesn't qualify for one of the above categories.

Tia, thanks for summarizing the discussion so far. I've made it through about the first 6 pages of the whopping Fine Jewelry category, and some things that I had questions about are.....

What to do with the stainless steel and other alternative metal jewelry? I don't know the first thing about these metals, would they be under the Fine Jewelry category or one of the others? I notice some of the stainless steel items are computer drives that can be worn as necklaces.

I also saw some wire-wrapped natural stones whose descriptions did not mention the type of metal used, so they could have been silver-toned craft wire, or they could have been sterling silver. The stones themselves were semi-precious so I suppose that would qualify them for the Fashion Jewelry area, but if they were wrapped with sterling silver wire, would that bump them into the Fine Jewelry area?

Is there a category for jewelry miscellania, such as the sonic jewelry cleaning machine? It makes sense for it to be in with the Fine Jewelry as that is what you would be cleaning with it, but is there also an area for cleaners, polishers, wax blanks for mold-making, etc.

Again, my opinion as a buyer:

Stainless steel and other alternative metals belong in Costume Jewellery.

A semi-precious stone with Sterling Silver settings could be in Fine Jewellery, provided it is a high-quality stone, faceted or cabbed.

If the stones were tumbled, set in Sterling Silver, they would belong in Fashion Jewellery. High-quality stones are never tumbled. I do happen to know something about this subject.

If the stones are set in silverplate, regardless of cut, they would belong in Fashion Jewellery.

There's already a category under Jewellery & Watches for Jewellery Boxes and Supplies. Cleaners and polishers, for example, can be used for all jewellery, so that's where buyers will look for them.

I think your example highlights an important point. Many of the listings simply don't describe the metal, or they use the vague "gold" or "silver". We should not have to guess whether the metal is Sterling Silver, silverplated, silvertoned, 14K Gold, goldplated, goldtoned, etc. This should be clearly stated in the title or the description.
