Post 180 has a good outline and it is one that will work. Thanks Tias treasures, for reposting the outline. Maybe after all this time it could be changed.

Actually, I disagree with the outline - 'costume jewellery' is a term coined in the Edwardian era and is just a slightly old-fashioned term for 'fashion jewellery' i.e. everyday jewellery designed to be worn with the current fashions or 'costume'.

That aside, I don't think you understand what Gazza meant by 'a structured list'.

If you read the sticky at the top of the forum, it shows how to make requests for minor additions. For major changes to a category, try this post as an example of how to present the changes in a way that can be actioned by admin.

Since I don't sell jewelry, I don't think I'm qualified to take it to this level. I was interested in this thread because I sometimes look for jewelry to buy and was having trouble sorting it out (there are a LOT of jewelry listings). Someone who's an expert will have to carry on with this.

    Here's a possible suggestion......

    Main catagory section:

    Fine Jewellery

    Gold
    Silver
    Platinum
    Other Fine Jewellery

    Subcatagories:

Gold> Rings> (agate, amber etc - list of the gemstones etc)

    Bracelets> (see rings above)
    Necklaces> ( ")
    Anklets
    Brooches
    Earrings
    Body jewellery
    Scrap

Silver> Rings> agate, amber etc (list of gemstones etc)

    Bracelets> (see rings)
    Necklaces> (see rings)
    Anklets
    Brooches
    Earrings
    Body Jewellery
    Scrap

    Platinum> Rings
    Other Platinum (lucky you! )

    Other Fine Jewellery

    Filled or Rolled gold> Rings
    Earrings
    Necklaces
    Bracelets
    Other

Gemstones Beads (eg ruby, real pearls)> Necklaces
    Earrings
    Rings
    Other

    Cameos> Shell
    Hardstone

    Hope this all makes sense!

Again, just a little suggestion; before anyone can confirm a listing on the gold, silver or platinum section, they could tick a disclaimer to say they confirm what they are selling is genuine solid gold/ silver/ platinum, and complies with their own countries laws on hallmarking.

This may hopefully guide sellers of rolled gold etc jewellery to their proper catagory, and maybe put off other potential sellers (or even scam sellers ) whose fine jewellery doesn't comply with (their own countries) hallmarking law.

Just a thought anyway - I'm no computer techie and the technology needed to do the disclaimer may be too complicated....

    Sorry for long post

Admin touted this idea themselves quite a while back in connection with cutting down on counterfeit items. As it hasn't been implemented there, I wouldn't hold your breath for it to be used for other purposes, either.

I know this was mentioned somewhere in the thread, because old costume jewelry can be extremely valuable. eBid has a separate category for Antique & Vintage Jewelry, with subcategories that are different from the ones for new jewelry.

    Should be something like;

Antique and Vintage jewellery>costume>non-precious metals ?

    Or: Antique & Vintage jewellery>costume/decorative>pre1900
    Antique & Vintage jewellery> costume/decorative> Edwardian

    etc??
Why not take a quick look at my Stores?

With regards to the OPs original fine jewellery section thread......

Is this is easier to use?

    Fine Jewellery

    Main Catagories

    Diamonds
    Necklaces
    Bracelets
    Anklets
    Earrings
    Brooches

    Subcatagories:

    Diamonds> rings>
    ...............>necklaces
    ................>bracelets
    etc etc

    Necklaces> gold> solid chains
    ................>gold> gemstone
    ................> silver>solid chains
    ................> silver> gemstones
    ................>rolled/ filled gold

    Rings> gold> wedding bands
    ..........> gold> gemstone> agate/ amber/ garnet etc
    ..........> silver> wedding bands
    ..........> silver> gemstone> agate / amber/ garnet etc
    ..........platinum
    ..........rolled/ filled gold

I've not enough time today to do a whole list, though hopefully you can see what I'm trying to do!

Ebid is getting really big now, and I reckon it's got to the stage where we need to separate the precious metals from eachother, rather than lumping them all together.

All the main jewellers (when sperating and forming their catagories online) have a completely seperate catagory for diamonds btw (and if u look in jewellers windows diamonds are always in a section of their own). They do it because diamonds are so popular and searched for, they need a section of their own. Maybe an idea to help potential diamond jewellery buyers here too?

Just throwing ideas around to possibly update the fine jewellery section. If this is a good one I'll do a proper list and maybe forward it in a proper new catagory thread.
