Does software have to be especially written to make use of multi-core processors as it does to make use of multi-processor systems?

Get them to build you a system you can upgrade as needed. So many really cheap systems have so much onboard and not separate that the whole lot is junk if something goes wrong.Separate graphics and sound cards are a must and room to upgrade memory as well.Get a good lot of speakers for it as well.Good luck mate and well done.

So nothing has changed then. Unless you are doing something very processor intensive, such as 3D rendering, and the software is designed to take advantage of a multi-core processor then it is a waste of money.

Rather harks back to the old Amstrad machine when he realised all most people wanted to do with a PC was word processing and brought out a cheap machine using an old Z80 processor and supporting system. Sold like hot cakes and did the job.

Huddy if you have money to burn, I built one online that should last you awhile. Added a little software to it also. For a few hundred more you can get a solid state hard drive.

You only really need to know a few simple specifications for what should be a reliable and reasonably long-lived machine, leave the details to your computer shop.

    Things you should ask for:
Intel dual-core CPU (may be called CoreDuo or Core2Duo)
    2GB RAM
160GB Hard Drive (or larger, but no more than 500GB)

If you don't want lots of wires then go for bluetooth keyboard and mouse, you may need to get a bluetooth card to go in the PC if it doesn't come with it on-board.

Give them a top price you're prepared to pay, a system with these specs including a good monitor shouldn't come to more than about £400.
