Thread: what book was your fav as a child & do you still have it?

I loved "Tom's Midnight Garden" I remember. Didn't own many books as a child (although I too have an ancient copy of "The folk of the faraway tree" somewhere) but used to borrow vast quantities from the library. Allegedly I "always had my nose stuck in a book!" We didn't have a tele until I was about twelve so I read a great deal!

    Sorry Kimbo, I loved it,
was read to us at school when I was about 5, it was a relatively new book back then. I got the whole series as paperbacks shortly after, tho they were replaced many times over the years. I currently have the Collins 1989 Hardback Series plus Land of Narnia Companion Book.

I don't think I have many of the paperbacks I had as a child ( possibly Beau Geste is still around) I know I had loads of Enid Blyton, but I still have many of the hardbacks given to me by my grandad.
Peter Pan, Wind in the Willows, Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, Just So Stories, Black Beauty, are still here, Children of the New Forest got read into oblivion at least twice & had to be replaced.
Arthur Ransome's Swallows & Amazons Series were also favourites (which I don't seem to have anymore).

Jane Eyre & Rebecca I love & re read every year or so
    Gothicina.

MAHATMA GANDHI - "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way in which its animals are treated."

I just discovered this thread, brought back some memories. I grew up on a farm in the middle of the woods, no radio, no TV, so I read a lot . . . these are the ones I loved the most.

Bambi (the original book by Felix Salton, not the Disney picture book). It was years before I realized he was a British author and they weren't whitetail deer.

The Black Stallion series by Walter Farley

    The Wizard of Oz

    Black Beauty

Green Grass of Wyoming, My Friend Flicka and Thunderhead by Mary O'Hara (another series)

    Peter Pan

Seems to be a theme here, either fantasy or animals . . .

And for some reason I never liked Alice in Wonderland, most people loved it.

my favorite book was the house that beebo built by phillipe fix

its a dystopia for small children .
The main character beebo is this grey haired man whose hardworking and good and first he gets a job and gets fired for trying to help a butterfly then he builds the most beautiful house in the world and the council come and knock it down and chase him away .

its part of a series of three books ( i have all three and gradually things just get worse and worse and in the end he just goes in a cave tunnel to try to get away from the state .

It taught me that the man is out to get me

If you still have a copy, you're probably better off than you thought!

I enjoyed Greek mythology, Grimms fairy tales (not the watered-down ones) and other tales that my anthropology-major older sis had. My father had many books of tales from Latin American countries and I enjoyed those too.

We didn't have a TV or telephone until I was nearly 17 so I read everything I could get my hands on. Still no TV, and still a voracious reader.

yes I still have all three of the series and I know they sell for good prices , I think the reason is that trillionaires collect beebo books and sit around on fancy leather sofas drinking fine brandy looking at beebo and saying "ah so true poor little beebo the world is hard on such as you".

My favourite was sent from Canada, just after the war - it was called 'Miss Sniff' and it was a hardback, all about a very pampered black cat. All the pictures of her were flocked, and I wore them out stroking them.
Another one was 'Make way for Ducklings' a story about some ducks that lived in the park in Boston (US) I loved that, and when I visited Boston in 2004, I found another copy. The ducks in the book illustrations have been made into bronzes and walk down one of the paths in the park!
