    If I knew the answer and more importantly, how to work it out I wouldn't be sitting here racking my brains as to how to make a bit extra cash this month... I would be either retired on a decent pension or in demand for my superb knowledge

    I am a genuine maths phobic having been rapped over the knuckles with a metal edged ruler when I got my answer to the daily mental arithmetic question wrong. This at the age of five I was in the kindergarten class

    To make matters worse...there was a reward system. Each child had an angel pinned on a board with a big ladder painted on it. The ladder ended at the gates of Heaven. Everytime you did a good thing your angel was moved up a rung. For bad things (Including getting mental arithmetic answers wrong) you went down a rung.... My angel never got off the ground

    <<<<<<<<< glances over her shoulder to check.....yes! Her guardian angel is still earthbound nearly sixty years on

    And if varphi is variable phi, then they're saying replace phi in the formula with 60.

    Which *seems* to be saying
    theta = 360(1 - sin(phi divided by 2))
    theta = 360(1 - sin(60/2))
    or 360(1 - 30)

    What I can't remember is when you start multiplying by the bit outside! It was a long time ago I did maths o level!

    And to be honest, that's all very hazy and seems over simplistic, so it's probably nonsense anyway. Perhaps an actual maths genius will turn up soon.

    Subscript and superscript?
    Wow, this thread has grown since I posted it last night! Thanks bykimbo, seems like everyone else has run a mile! 360(1 - 30) - that's what I thought as well. The only thing is, I thought that small phi was 0.618 and not 60? I also don't know how if I need to multiply out the brackets to find the answer.

    I'm going to ask on the Maths forums as suggested by others on this thread.

    So sorry to hear about your traumatic experiences with Maths redmerlin. The same happened to me in kindergarten but that was for spelling. We were lined up in a row at the end of each class, the a crowd of parents would be watching and waiting to pick us up from school. Then the teacher would get a big fat ruler out and give us one hard smack on the palm for each spelling mistake we had made that day.

    Funny thing is, no parents complained. It seemed to be considered normal.
