Default Lady Morgans VAM Grading or Pire

Is anyone interested in the collecting & selling of Morgan Silver Dollar VAM coins? I have an overall interest in Morgan & Peace Silver Dollars, but recently I was introduced to the world of VAMS.

I personally find this area of coin collecting very interesting but I believe there is also much room for scams, & fakes.

Can someone give their opinion on what they think of this specialized area of coin collecting. Do you think it is worth all the time, effort, and study it would take to truely understand this market.

Note: Can select more than one option in the poll.

Another type of Morgan in the news: Check out this football catch by Edwin Baptiste from "Morgan State College" in a win over Salem-Winston State College. Being termed "a miracle" by sports commentator.

Die varieties is simply another way to inflate values.

I don't really know much about coins although I do have a small biscuit tin with an assortment of british coins dating from the late 1800's to the most recent 'commemorative coins' that are being minted in the uk. I have uk coins stamped Isle of Mann, Ireland etc, along with some french, portuguese, and cypriot coins and notes from my travels.

However, with Ray having 'served time' in the military, we both have interest in collecting militaria and I do military research (among other things), and from that I write articles for the local military association newsletters. To enhance our military collection we collect medals.

As I said earlier, I don't know much about coins, but in order to enhance our medal collection, I had to learn about medals - the periods of issue, for what field of combat, the differences between kings and queens crown on the medals, what bars went with which, which ribbons, to identify a medal from just its ribbon, order of wear, how to spot ripoffs and fakes from official copies and originals etc etc etc. The list is endless. My knowlewdge has to be correct in that the articles I write are read by the 'men that were in the firing line'. To digress slightly, it reminds me of something that one veteran once told me when I asked him if he went to France with the Normandy Veterans. 'No, I went to France once, and they were shooting at me'. he says calmly. 'Luckily they missed. I'm not going back in case their aim has improved'.

Back to coins - To my mind, to be able to sell an item as that is your goal, you really have to know your product. If you collect coins as well and sell off duplicates then learning more about the differences and how to spot fakes, copies etc will only enhance your enjoyment of your collection. There is a uk publication by Token publishing called simply Coin News - this link is Tokens home page. http://www.tokenpublishing.com/ Not sure if it will work for you in the USA - should do.

I'm not sure if any of the above helps, but I hope so.

    Welcome BabsnRay:
I agree that if you plan to sell a particular line of coin, banknotes, or medals you really do need to know the product line you are involved with. I believe that the learning process is always evolving because it is a complex area of collecting; and one must never get lax but continue to learn & sharpen their skills.

I've been around coins for more than a few days, I've kept my eyes and ears open, I have a pretty decent library, but I've never seen the term MSD before.
