Default A bit confused about selling dvd's

I have a friend who just gave me over 100 dvd's (previously viewed) to do with as I may. A few I have already sold on feebay. I would like to list some here also but I'm a bit confused about the whole region thing. I think all of what I have is region 1 since my friend lives here in the USA and purchased them here. I'm just wondering can I sell them to worldwide or just offer to other USA buyers? Are they viewable in other countries?

    Thanks.

Hello. Apparantly you can change your DVD to play other region movies. I asked the same question a few days ago. It might stay locked after a few changes though so I don't know how many would buy a different region DVD. I recently listed a few DVD's myself. I've just listed them in US and Canada to be safe. That's about all I know about it.

It's not going to hurt to list them worldwide as long as your description mentions that they are Region 1 DVDs. You never know what somebody might want. I, myself, have bought quite a few PAL format VHS tapes over the years from the UK, even though I have no way to watch them. They were just something I wanted for my collection. Again, you never know.

Thanks for your input. I think I will probably go ahead and list them available to worldwide. There are people who might want them even if they don't have a way to currently play them. I remember years ago when I was collecting LP's I thought it was kind of cool to have a UK import of certain bands.
Of course I didn't have any problem playing it but it was mainly the collectable aspect for which I bought it. I had American version of same LP anyway to play.

Old VHS PAL machines can be bought in UK for virtually nothing.

True, but you also have to have a TV capable of viewing PAL. I have a "combo" VCR that I bought at a thrift store that plays both NTSC and PAL tapes, but it will not stay on. As soon as you insert a tape, it shuts off. I've been meaning to get it fixed, but I haven't. I suppose once it is fixed, I can hook it up to a TV input card in a PC and select PAL as the source and watch it on the PC's monitor.

Hi, Region 1 can be played worldwide on multi region DVD players, Here in the UK most of the cheap players play all regions, it's only when you buy the more expensive ones that you have to worry about them being region locked (and then most can be cracked) So yes, go ahead an list them worldwide, anyone who wants them will know if they have a compatible DVD player.

Hi, I thought this very useful info would help. It was posted sometime ago by one of our Australian members (Duffy).

Will your DVDs play in my country?

Australian DVDs are formatted in PAL and encoded for Region 4 unless stated otherwise on our website.
You may notice that some discs have multiple zones ensuring playability in other countries, providing your DVD player and television are both PAL compatible.

    What are the "regions"?

A security system introduced to DVD at the request of Hollywood's major studios to ensure that DVDs released and sold in one region will not play on DVD machines in other regions.
Movie distributors therefore maintain control over release dates of their films, as well as enabling discs to be produced that conform to different censorship laws, language and subtitle requirements.
When a DVD disc is manufactured, a region code is applied at the authoring stage such that the final disc will play only on those players distributed in the designated world region.

There are 6 regions throughout the world:

Region 1 - Canada, United States and its Territories

Region 2 - Japan, Europe, South Africa and the Middle East

Region 3 - Southeast Asia and East Asia

Region 4 - Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Central and South America

Region 5 - Indian Subcontinent, Former Soviet Union and Africa

    Region 6 - China

Tee Vee Dvd will list all the regions a particular DVD is compatible with.
In the instance of a Region 0 or Region All title, the item page will list "1,2,3,4,5,6" as the region encoding.

Regional codes are optional for the makers of DVD discs themselves.
The encryption system on each disc is the same which leads to the next question.

    My disc won't work!

Quite often the cause of this can be due to discs that have been handled incorrectly (ie. fingerprints or scratches on the read surface, discs forceably removed from their casing causing cracks).
It is most unusual for a disc to be faulty in any way when manufactured.
There are rare instances of faulty batches which usually result in product recalls.

Occasionally discs have been found to not be compatible with certain DVD players which is why we encourage our customers to firstly check any problem discs on another brand of player.

The Moral of the story here, is check your DVD player plays the dvd before you purchase any unit .

One hopes this will explain all about regions,it can be confusing sometimes, have a great day and great viewing.

bottom line is as long as you say they are REGION 1, you should be fine. Many people who live outside of R1 still have DVD players that play R1 DVDs so they might be interested in the DVD. So, go for it!
